He won't eat his carrot which he normally BEGS for- and he's making the noise of a bird's cooing. What does this mean for Teddy? :-(
Answers:
I'm not sure what the problem is, but you should probably take him to the vet. If a guinea pig stops eating, it could die very quickly. Make sure to give him vitamin C - always.
poor teddy..
could he be a she and be pregnant?
Guinea pigs don't live much past 3 years. Is Teddy that age yet? He could also have tooth problems, an abscess or a cavity that is making it painful to chew. I know the one guinea pig I had used to make a lot of different noises all the time. I'm inclined to think that cooing may be it's form of comforting itself. Make sure Teddy has lots of water and fresh food daily, even if he isn't eating much of it.
You could try an experiment of softening some of his pellets with water. See if he'll eat those. Make sure they're not a gluey mess on the bottom of a bowl. Try piling the soft food in a mound to make it more appealing.
And think of getting Teddy to a vet, if he loses too much weight. After all, there's not much there to begin with, right?
- he might not be hungry
-try feeding him some oatmeal mixed in with his regular food
- how old is he because they usually dont live past 20
Guinea pigs make different noises as they get older, don't worry about it when they throw new ones at you.
As for the carrots - take a look inside his mouth. How do his teeth and lips look? he might have a growth on/in his mouth which is making eating difficult. Also, carrots are hard to chew, so if his teeth are in bad condition he may be unable to eat carrots.
If you don't notice anything wrong that you can diagnose yourself, and if this has been going on for more than a few days, take him to you vet. Guinea pigs are really fragile, and it's better to be safe than sorry.
I'm sorry for your guinea pig and for you, and I hope he's okay. Here's a few excellent websites on guinea pigs, hope they give you some good info -
