My hamster had babies; then he ate some of them. Why would this happen?

We separated the male from the mommy.
Answers:
There are a few reasons, there could be something wrong with them or if you touch the babies sometimes they will eat them. I would let nature run its course, it knows best. However, as soon as the babies eat reg. food seperate all females from males, they will mate with each other and with their parents.
*He*?
Probably afraid they would grow up into teenagers!
who ate the babies? the mother? I think, a hamster who had just given birth are really harsh. that had happened to my girlfriend's pets, two yrs ago. their hamster had babies and the mother ate her babies and even killed the male one. but the female eventually died. But I think, You should first get the babies away from the mother after they had been born..
Maybe the babies were sick or had a disease.
Some eat the babies because there may be to many of them! Some do because some are ill in some fashion! Some will move them a safe distance away and let them die do to illness!

I had a peek and she removed some babies away from he others, and forgot them. I took them to the vet and he checked them and found they had galloping pneumonia!
DO NOT TAKE THE BABIES AWAY FROM THEIR MOTHER!

I had a hampster when I was a kid, and the day after we brought her home, she had babies and ate two.

She was stressed.

We put her cage in a quiet area of the house, gave her extra food, alot of treats, and left her alone. We did NOT handle her OR the babies for a few weeks (just fed and watered and tried to take the poop out of the cage unobtrusively).

The other 3 babies lived.

If you do not have a very dark private nest for her in the cage, you should probably put one in.
It is usually caused by stressed and is actually rather common. You definately need to keep your males and females separated or soon you will have even more baby hamsters on your hands. This also goes for the babies, They become mature at about four or five weeks and the males need to be separated from their sisters and mother as soon as they are completely eating on their own.
that's a fairly common thing for a hamster to do, the mother probabally just counldn't take care of them
if it was the first time birth this would happen because they don't recognize the babies.
I had a hamster a few years ago. About two weeks after I got her, she turned evil on me. I found out the next day that she was just being overprotective because she had 10 baby hamsters. A few days later, I found one dead in the cage and the mother and babies were eating it. It was disgusting and really sad too. I read in a book that the babies should be separated once they can begin eating hamster food. Otherwise, they will get in fights with the mother.
i once had rabbits and once the mother gave birth i immediately serperated the father because he was acting real weird and he was like..i dno evil. Its normal for animals like that to eat their babies. Just keep the babies away from danger and care for them urself and they will be fine.
Becuz the babies tasted like chicken!!Watch out when your sleeping, cuz your hamsters eyes will turn red and his teeth will turn razor sharp and he will eat you!
cannibalism. =[[ you probably touched them and or made loud noises.
It is part of nature that female hamsters may eat their young. If this happens to you, here are some factors that may (or may not) have caused it.
She was stressed out by loud noises or the father.
The babies were touched by a human and therefore, had another scent on them.
The babies were deformed or had genetic disorders.
The mother was a first-time, inexperienced mother.
Mothers may eat the babies for any of these reasons. I have found that the second birth is usually much larger and has a much better survival rate because the mother knew what was going on and what to do. The first litter was sort of a surprise to her and she had to learn the ropes.

Sometimes, the mother never has any trouble with the first litter. Again, it just depends on the hamster. If your mother eats her first litter, give her plenty of recovery time and try again. Unless she has problems with her health, I can guarantee more of the babies will live the second time around. It often takes a little time to get the ball rolling, but once it is done, you will have plenty of little pups.
