My hamsters finger wont move. I think it just needs time to heal. my dad doesnt want me taking it to the vet..

What should i do its getting a bit better every day. oh yeah and my female hamsters pregnant(well my brothers female) its deffinately going to have the babies today what are some good signs to tell when the babies are there.
from: a worried guy
thanks for answering
very apreciated.
Answers:
As far as the finger..don't take the chance, take it to the vet. Most bone injuries do not heal on their own. There are things vets can do to repair injuries.and they really need to be seen to determine if it will heal. Animals react differently to injury than we do and out of instinct will use a severely injured appendage because they feel they have to in order to survive. If there is any nerve damage, they will likely end up chewing it off.then you WILL have to deal with it and it could cost a whole lot more. Just because you think it's getting better, doesn't mean it is.get him to the vet. As far as your pregnant female..when you see babies is a sure sign the babies are there. Other than that, can't help you there. Please do get her spayed though, there are far too many unwanted animals on this planet already.
if shes pregnant you are going to have to separate them soon b/c i believe the male will eat them. just like rabbits. as for the hurt foot or toe they wont do anything for that it will heal. you said its getting better every day. congratulations your going to have a big family
You think that it just needs time to heal. But I don't think so. I think you should take it to a vet as there might be some complications with bons or a stretched vein. Secondly, congrats for the pregnancy for your brothers female. She will behave very different when the time will come nearer and also much more unsecure. She might not allow anyone near to her. But don't worry. This behaviour will not stay for long. After giving birth, slowly her behaviour will be normal as usual.
I don't know about pet pregnancy, but I'd say let nature take it's course
just a tip:when the babies are born, dont go near them or touch them because the mother will try to defend them by putting it in its mouth and the babies will suffocate them and they will die.

My hamster's eyes are turning white, why?

I bought hamsters from PetSmart about 2 weeks ago, 3 Siberian males. One of them that had bright red eyes, is now turning white. I have no idea how old they are, the guy at PetSmart didn't know either. The other 2 hamsters are fine, but I am worried about this one and I don't know what to do, is it allready old and dying? Thanks for your help.
Answers:
When my hamster's eyes went white he went blind. He was just old and passed away shortly after. I hope that's not the case for your hamster. :(
that happen to my hamster once i took it to the vet and they said that it was because it was becoming blind they did some surgery and i fine now.. good luck
usually when the eyes start to turn white that's an indication of blindness.
The hamster might be sick,I heard dat 4 some animals if you wanna know they are sick then they eyes tend to turn white,it probably is a sign of old age or dat the haamster is sick,I suggest you take him to the vet,now you may know dat your hamster is NOT very sick but just kinda a lil sick or starting to be sick,I hope this helps you and hope dat the hamster will be fine!!Good Luck!
sounds like cataracts. hamsters don't usually live very long (something like from 3 to 5 yrs). cataracts are not painful, but it does mean they will go blind eventually. they usually don't have much trouble adapting. just don't move the stuff around in their cage, keep it an environment they're familiar with.
it could be cataracts which means hes going blind. i think its fixable now though. i had a blind hamster when i was young, just takes a bit of extra lookin after.

and it was quite funny watching him falling about and bumping into things
i'm sure your hamster is going blind..you should maybe take it to the vet before it gets any worse.good luck
older animals who start to have a gradually fogging of the eyes usually are diagnosed with glaucoma.
Without being seen by a vet, it would be hard to know.but if it is glaucoma it won't lessen your hamster's life as long as when you let it out of the cage you keep an eye on it. Hamster's are nearsighted in the first place, so it normally can't see further than 7 inches. With glaucoma, the sight might be limited or completely gone.
As I am sure you are aware, the only true diagnoses is to be seen by a vet.

cataracts are the most common cause of eyes going milky.
i am sorry to tell you this but your hamster is going blind

my hamster's ears are rotting and half of one fell off what should i do?

one day my hamster's ear fell off because it was rotting and his tail was cut and sore three times. i dont know what could cause this can anyone help me.
Answers:
I have heard of this happening. You need to get him to a vet because this is caused by a flesh eating bacteria I believe. If you don't get him on antibiotics he will eventually die!

call the vet and see if he has any experience, or bring him to a petstore to help

if your not to conected to your hampster, take him to the petstore and buy a newone, and have them either let it go, or kill it

if you can't afford a vet and the petstore won't help, e-mail me a pic and ill try to help by browsing one of my animal medical books.

take the poor thing to a vet!
go to the vet sorry its your only option
You've got to be kidding me. Why haven't you taken the poor thing to a vet??
Don't be cruel to the poor little thing. the way I look at it is if you can't look after a pet you shouldn't have one.
Take it to a vet. This is not normal and he is probably in some pain.

My hamsters chew a lot?

I have 2 hamsters, both in their own separate cage. I put things like cardboard tubes from toilet rolls in their cages to keep them occupied but at night they both insist on chewing on the bars. Not only is this annoying but can keep me awake at night.

Can anyone suggest any other (cheap) ways of keeping my wee furry friends amused during their nocturnal hours?
Answers:
I have two russian dwarf hamsters (Poppy and Susan, who were 2 years old yesterday) and they don't make a sound. but then they are in a clear plastic cage :) The only bars are at the top, which they can't reach. (Well, that's not strictly true - in their younger days they climbed up the food sticks I hung from the top and started swinging around on the bars. A very impressive sight, although they never did figure out how to get down, other than dropping to the floor like a stone lol.)

Oddly enough they don't really chew the wooden blocks and other toys I put in there. Even when I make a house out of half a cereal packet (that's not me being cheap - they love it) they don't really chew that either. Although they are partial to toilet/kitchen rolls and egg boxes.

My sister has gerbils and they eat everything in sight, including the wheel. And yet Poppy and Susan seem content with a toilet roll.

Mind you. I have got a play-pen style thing for them, which folds out to allow them to run around a large area without escaping, and they really attack the bars on that, quite viciously sometimes, but then maybe they think they've been put in prison? I also heard excessive chewing on metal bars can cause brain damage, but I'm not sure how true that is.

As for the wheel noise - I bought two 'silent wheels' a while back (the latest in wheel technology apparently, using ball-bearings or something like that) and they don't make a sound (and at 拢7 each I would hope not!). So no squeaking or creaking. and Poppy even likes to sleep on hers!
They may need something harder than cardboard tubes to chew on.its instinct %26 it stops their teeth from overgrowing.
You can't really train hamsters. They chew to keep their teeth at a decent length, else they would look like little yellow toothed vampire hamsters. I suggest you put them in a different room.
They chew to keep their teeth to manageable length, they need something quite hard to do this,As for the noise at night the are nocturnal, may i suggest moving them out your room at night
there are chewing blocks you can get but they dont often stop them chewing the bars.. hamsters always seem to chew the bars all night long.. only thing i can really suggest is putting them in a different room to where you sleep.
try a small branch of a tree .////////////////
I have no idea I've had a couple of hamsters, and if they wasn't chewing on the cage all night they, were making noise running on that crazy wheel, going nowhere. Sorry I can't help.
throw some small rocks and hard twigs in their cages.
buy them a fish tank. they wont be able to bit through that. i have a hamster and he lives in a fish tank. all he does is jump around.
Learn to ignore their noise
You also will learn to ignore other people's gossips!
Or you change them with fish, they dont make any noise
In any pet store they have wooden shew tows and sticks that you can put in their cage so they can chew. Like most everyone here said, they chew because their teeth do not stop growing but continue to grow, they must chew to trim their teeth, otherwose will be come unable to drink and eat.

You could also find some natural sticks or branches in there. Try either Oak or Birch.
i would suggest putting them in the garage or the basement at night. so you dont hear them. you HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS LIKE TO HAVE 20 TEDDY BEAR HAMSTERS 2 GERBILS AND A DWARF HAMSTER RUNNING ON THEIR WHEELS ALL NIGHT. i put mine in the garage in the basement. i still have 2 hamsters in my room that chew on their bars all night because they have babies.
Go to the pet store and get any kind of chewing sticks mine seem to like the wooden kind Do they have a wheel in their cage?
You could always try lightly coating the inside of the bars with Tabasco sauce.I don't think they would want to chew them then!

My hamster's butt is swollen from time to time, is that normal?

Also he's little behind is quite hanging .. (cuz the "vet" told me is male) I've seen others in the store n none of them look like him..but the doc told me is normal.but I have my doubts..cuz also told me he didnt need no shots or any check ups! So it's ok to have their butt like that sometimes bigger than other times? wich stills being too big cuz is kind of hanging when he walks.
Answers:
You bet your life it is normal. The sometimes he is bigger he is bigger -let's say it, in the balls and that is because he is experiencing a male version of heat. His but gets that way when he is in heat because his hormone levels rise drasticly then. He will go back to his other norm when it is over and it will come and go and come and go because the hampsters reproductive cycle is much, much shorter than ours. Don't worry about him and i would not get him a mate either, they repro like rabbits and the parents will attack and kill the young too-it is amess-don't.
Maybe he is a she and she heard that guys like big butts and they cannot deny it.
could it be his anal gland if it goes back to normal don't worry about it.
Unless your hamster acts and looks sick, relax. Just like humans, some male hamsters are more blessed than others.~;o)
I have a hamster too and he never gets a swolen butt like that.

my hamster?

well, when do hamsters die. Like how old are they when they die?
Answers:
Life expectancy is 2-3 years, max. You may find the occasional story of a hamster living longer, but it's very rare that one will.

Properly taken care of (cage cleaned regularly, played with regularly, good food, fresh treats, plenty of space in his home, etc), you'll have a couple of years with your pet.

Sometimes they do get sick even if they are properly cared for, and quite often, it hits quickly and might not even be immediatly noticed. Sometimes it is, and you can try to find a vet that works on rodents (not many do, as they are so tiny it's hard to work on them or discover what exactly IS wrong), and that may save your pet, but more often than not, your pet will die if it gets sick.

Imporperly cared for (dirty cage, ignored, not feed or given fresh water often, etc), will cause a much earlier demise.

With pet hamsters, the precentage of hamsters that make it past a year is low, simply because so many kids get a pet hamster and don't know what type of care is involved, or what is needed. Or, they loose interest, and the hamster wastes away from neglect.

If your hamster makes it past a year, then the chances of it making it to 2 full years or longer are about 50/50.

Good luck
they only die buy srange food
They can live for 2-6 years.
I think they only live about 3 or 4 years.
I had mine for one year. But they reproduce quickly. I bought 2 hamsters, they had about 20 babys, but the mother ate alot of them. (if they have babies, DON'T touch the babys lmao)
hamsters live no longer than 2,a year is old for a hamster
About 2 or 3 but I would imagine they could live to about 5 with good care.
My daughter has a hamster. She read that they live about 1000 days, about 3 years.
they can live to be 3 or 4 unless they get sick..
they can die by not enough water, heat,no care and there is no specific time they die the go when its there time to go
my hamster lived tell he was 4 and a half .but it is usually 2 or 3 years old .
They live about 2-3 years
pretty old.

my hamster?

i think that my hamter is dying because he is loosing his fur and he is really fat but he dont eat that much. what do i do?
Answers:
why do u think he's dying? if he's just losing fur that is a sign of old age and they can live for many more months. they live 2-3 yrs. he could also have a vitamin deficiency so get him some hamster vitamin drops for his water from the petstore. around $5. even if it's just from age the vitamins will help a lot. have u changed his bedding recently? make sure u r using carefresh/and/or aspen only.

has he always been fat because it could be constipation if not. does he walk hunched up or have u seen a lot less droppings? if that, a drop of vegetable or olive oil will help. and some fresh fruit/veggies--about 1/2 in piece daily.

good luck
I know this is a terrible thing to say, but it's true, hamsters are disposable pets. Hamsters only live for about 2 years.so you should probably just get a new one or a dog.
do?

umm. get a box?
feed him to a huge snake
I'm sorry to hear that your hamster isn't feeling well.Probably the best thing to do is to bring him to vet if you can afford it. Otherwise.give him the favourite treat of his and pet him as much as you can before you have to be apart from him. I wish you the best luck.
well, there comes a time in all a hamsters life when he/she must go to hamster heaven (aka the nuts%26seeds factory :P) what you have told me in your question is indeed the early stages of serious hamster illness (having owned 4 hamsters myslef). This could either be the beginning of a natural death or contraction of an illness(such as "wet towel" disease) This becomes even more likely if you see his fur looking "greasy". hope i helped. Deepest Sympathy
I'm sorry love, I don't want to hurt u any more than u already r hurting, but I agree with The China Doll, hamsters only live for about 2 years. If u can afford it take him to the vet, it may be only a minor problem that he/she can take care of. I hope that gives u a little bit of help. Sorry I can't be of more help.
don't listen to what the other people say a hamster is an animal and whether it is old and dying or young with something wrong with it you should take it to a vet it sounds like from other peoples answers you can forget about the hamster every animal deserves vet care take it too a vet

my hamster won't use its excercise wheel.wat do I do?

well I got a wheel for my hamster, but it won't use it. is it too fat or lazy or wat?
Answers:
a simple way, to see if your hamster uses the wheel (@ all):
make a mark (with a marker or even pencil) and check whether the mark is in a different position, the following morning.

if not, you may have the wrong wheel for your hamster;
the usual 4 to 5 inch wheels are okay for dwarfs, definitely too small for Syrians;
even the largest hamster wheels you can get (7 to 8") are hardly large enough, for a large (female) Syrian.
i eventually got a 12" (rat) wheel for my hamster, even though he sometimes still uses his 7" (XXX) Silent one, when he is too lazy to get into the other cage.
Put your hamster in the wheel and spin the wheel!
You have to turn your lazy hamster to un-lazy hamster!
i agree with the first answer
go to a vet
Do you stay up all night to see if he does? Hamsters are nocturnal animals, they sleep in the daytime.
Probably uses it at night, that's when they're most active. Is it big enough for him?
He may be using the whell, but only when you are sleeping. My hamsters do the same thing they refuse to run on it until I have gone to sleep or I'm not in the room. Your's may just like to exercise in private. Or the whell may be to small.
Some hamsters only like certain kinds of wheels. Some only like the wheels that are fully enclosed and plastic, some like the wire mesh wheels, some like the wire bar wheels, and some like the solid metal wheels.

Also, as everyone else stated, hamsters are nocturnal animals and chances are your hamster is using the wheel when you're not around (ie: sleeping).

Try to listen for squeaking at night.
As stated before, there are different types of wheels. I prefer the plastic ones with the solid running surface. Little hamster legs can get caught and broken in the wire wheels, especially dwarf hamsters. Try a different kind of wheel if you know for sure that he isn't using it a night.
You could try tying some food on to one of the metal bars. a bit heigher than he can reach in front. he will take a step towards the food and it will move and he may find it fun! you never no! other wise u might notice the food gone in the morning this means he is active at night!
it may not like the wheel. i would give it some time to get used to it. if the hamster doesn't then try an exercise ball. if the hamster still doesn't like that then you need to hamster proof a room in your house and let him roam and exlpore. you can get tunnels or make some of your own. go to the nearest pet store and see what they have to offer.

My hamster won't move and is cold when i hold it. it wont eat or drink. when i set ot on bak legs it falls.

My hamster seems ill. It will not move. IT's body temperature is cold and it doesn't seem to be eating or drinking anything. Plz respond ASAP.

they only live 18 -24 months try sittin him on a warm hot water bottle and massage him to get his circulation up also try him with water in a straw.such up the water and put your thumb over the end release when you have it at his mouth he may pick up .get him to the vets first thing if he doesnt
Your hamster is ready for a dirt nap.
you need to go to a vet ASAP!
Is it still alive? Go to the Vets
mm how can i put this is it died
i think it might be dead.
Is he alive?
checked out to Hammy heaven
.dead.
ummm honey,,,is your hamster dead?
You had better call the vet because it sounds like it won't last much longer if it doesn't get help.
go to the vet!
bless ur hamster!!1
Got a shoe box?
sorry dude.your hamster sounds dead
try giving it the kiss of life
It is just ignoring you
Put it in the microwave to heat it up. When it start to have steam coming off it you will know when to stop the microwave.
Ummmmmm, your hamster is probably dead.
Gotta box ??
The coldness should clue you in that the little guy is not alive anymore.
If you keep it in a cold place, they can go into hibernation. Get it to a warmer room and it'll wake up. Otherwise, it is dead, go buy a new one.
well it probably got to cold, so the only thing you can do now is keep it as warm as possible. DO NOT putit in direct heat wrap it in a towel and then warm it up. short of spending $120 dollars at a vet there is not much you can do.
he is dead.
Hamster's heaven is a better place.
It had a good run. Bury it before it makes new memories (flies, smell, bones.) or before you get hungry
It sounds like your hamster may be dead. If not, take it to a vet (if you care). If you don't care then let it die slowly by itself or be merciful and chop its head off.
bury it
as sad as it is, the others are right. your poor hamster has passed. gone to the great treadmill in the sky
your hampster is a lazy b'stad
Go to the vet.if it's still alive :( .good luck
dont man handle your hampster like that. ur not supposed to put it on its back legs. take it to the vet, and if it shivers in your hands agains its probably scared not cold

My hamster wont chew!?

i adopted him. hes got special needs. but i can not get him to chew. i have bought him the bark pieces and now the fruit flavored wood pieces. i don't want his teeth to get to long they hurt him. what can i do to get him to chew or what works super well? hes not even chewing his cage.
Answers:
if he's an older hamster, he may not want to chew much. Baby hamsters chew up everything. Mine did. I had 5 over the span of 5yrs. But keep the wood chips in there and if he/she feels the erge, they will chew. As long as it chews it's food, it'll be fine. I worried about the same thing with mine.
Milkbone original dog biscuts work like a charm. They love the flavor and they wear down teeth. Just be sure they don't contain garlic in the flavor. It is VERY bad on the digestive track. Maybe a dab of peanut butter would help "inspire" him.
maybe you should try leaving the treat in the cage for a while i know when i first got my hamster he wouldnt eat but after a few days of leaving him alone and not bothering to try and make him eat he started eating so maybe just leave the treat in his cage for a day and then the next day check to see if it has any chew or scratch marks on it if you not u might want to get him checked he could be sick unless uve already had him checked then idk

my hamster was bitten in differetn parts of her body by other hamster?

my hamster was seriously bitten in differetn parts of her body , and now she looks like is she is sleeping , but she is having cramps and she looks very tired.
I tried to give her some water and food , and she does not react.

please help me to save my hamster i really love her.
Answers:
first off make sure shes separated from the other hamster. i'm guessing they r syrian, not dwarf. syrians HAVE to be caged separately. take the nest/bed area of the other one and put it in a new cage. u can use a big 18 gallon rubbermaid tub temporarily.

u need to get her to a small animal vet. chk the phonebook or just call %26 get a referral or look online. until u can get there use a little Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) in small amounts to the area twice a dayfor disinfecting the wounds. if his eye is hurt u can wipe it with a warm wash cloth if it is closed. (wipe front to back in 1 direction) use a saline solution---contact lense or eye drop saline solution works on any cuts to his eye.

she needs to eat. try to give her cucumber. buy her some childrens plain pedialyte--by the baby food-- and feed it with an eye dropper to her. she if she'll eat some plain yogurt, shredded carrot, and hamster pellets that have soaked in water so theyre soft.

good luck! i hope she's better soon.
oh no i think u should see the pet vet and try to straighten things a bit
Take her to a vet if all of them are closed in your area try an emergency vet, if money is an issue check around to seee if any take payments, most do. Good Luck
Defnitly see a vet! They will probably fix things up! Not to worry though if your Hampster was bitten by hampsters that might of had shots but if not there is a 60% chance that nothing is going to happen! Good Luck!
The best way to save her is to put her out of her misery.
Get her a cage of her own. Hamsters are solitary animals and don't appreciate roomates. If you don't, they will continue to fight and she will probably be killed.
Getting her better will depend on how badly she is hurt. You should see a vet. Unfortunately, there is not a lot you can do for her. Just give her time and quiet, and wait and see.
Good Luck.
well they were just playing with eachother, i think you should take the other hamster out of the cage and put it in a different cage so that the other hamster can get some sleep and keep them separate because maby they dont like eachother.and if the hamster is stiff its dead. but then I would get another one and move on.
try cutting up some grapes and putting them in her mouth, making her eat them. That helps sometimes. Offer her carrots and other vegetables. anything to keep her hydrated/eating something. If you can, get her to a vet.

As for the hamsters attacking each other, what kind of hamsters are they? If they are Syrian hamsters they need to be kept APART. Syrian hamsters are anti-social creatures by nature and are EXTREMELY territorial. They should not live together, and if you are breeding them, they should only be together long enough to breed. If they are dwarf hamsters, they are social creatures, but they need to live together if you want them to remain social. If not, they will attack over territory.

Syrians cannot live together at all. They will kill each other. Even if they have the babies. Once it's time for babies to leave, make sure the babies leave! Dwarfs can live together from birth on up, and never really have any problems.

My hamster smells any tips?

My hamster stinks really bad i do clean his cage weekly and i know you can't wash hamsters so what can i do?
Answers:
Clean out the cage more often, for starters. Maybe do a spot clean every other day, and clean it every 5 days instead of 7.

Another thing you can do is provide the hamster with chinchilla sand (not dust!) in a small container. Your hamster will roll in it to clean himself up, and his fur will feel sooo soft afterwards.

You can get it at any pet shop, usually for around $5. The dust is cheaper, but do NOT use that. It is harmful to your ham's respriotory system.

Edited to add-

Do NOT use PINE or CEDAR shavings for bedding. They contain toxic oils that are bad for the hamster, and can cause death. If you are using wood shavings, use ASPEN only. Alternativly, Carefresh is much more absorbant than any wood shavings, and doesn't smell up the area nearly as fast as wood shavings do.
i use to have a ham ham, she was a girl, and smelled i lil too, thats always normall for hamsters to smell but if it smells bad, take it to a vet, and make sure you are cleaning its cage atleast once a week. oh yea, and male hamsters tend to smell worse than the girls
Plug his nose.
Well when I saw this, I thought: Maybe you should spray some Febreeze on it. But don't do that, or your beloved hamster could die. Ok.maybe you should take it to the vet. Maybe something's wrong with it.
Do NOT put him/her in the dishwasher or washing machine; do not use Febreze on him/her; and do not use Clorox bleach around the poor thing.

Generally, hamsters are supposed to be odorless. Maybe you need to clean the cage more often or use a different cleansing method. Be sure to remove the urine corners daily!

If that doesn't work, check with a vet to make sure your pet isn't sick.
uhm we had four hamsters over the years and we washed them all.one of them 'big bum' LOVED being washed and blow dried afterwards.

I just did it in the bathroom sink with baby shampoo and held her at all times, they all seemed to enjoy it but one of the them like I said LOVED it.
Deoderant
put him in the washing machine
Try Changing to a pine shaving. We use pine shavings and they absorb some of the odor. Or you could try changing the cage more often
It is better to clean the cage every other day due to the lack of control of thier bowel movements they sh*t frequently. And you can buy waterless shampoo from your vet/pet shop that you just dust them with then comb/brush it out. Just don't do it too often.
Put put coffee beans (or any dry coffee) in the room where your hamster is (NOT WHERE THE HAMSTER CAN GET IT THOUGH %26 NOT IN THE CAGE) Coffee can get just about any smell out of any room .
hope this helps
Leave a can of deoderant on his desk when he isn't there. He'll get the point. I did.
All these are stupid, except for the adivce about changing. So he is what I tryed because my little guy smells like a boy. i bought him this special stuff in the hamster isle, and is a dust bath, put a little in a container and mine love it. Leave it in there for like a day or so. If he doesn't use it then you can hold him, and sprinkle a little bit on him, rub it in, and then blow it off. Just becareful not to get it in his eyes. Just blow lightly, he will get the rest off.

my hamster runs in circles when i give hem a food pellett, why?

i was feeding my rats, who to this moment still think its feeding time, time to horde all of it. anyway, the pellets are labled "kaytee Forti-Diet mouse rat and hamster" pellett thingies, they are large, i hand one to my hamster to see if he would eat it, and i wanted to watch him eat it, its bigger than his head, so i removed the 2 house thingies, and gave each dwarf russian hamsters a pellet thing, gorby, the shy one ate it on the spot, and lost interest, stalin, the mentally retarded one, stuck it in his mouth and ran laps araound the cage floor untill it dropped, he jumps on it until its stuck in hos teeth and cintunies running laps, he wont eat it in the corner like he usually does, why is he running in circles folowing the edge of his cage? and why does the shy hamster eat it in the open? they are both russian dwarf and are fairly young. also is it safe to feed these kinds to my dwarfs? what do you feed yours? can you make a food chart on what to feed them on mondays/tuesdays ect
Answers:
he's scared of the pellet or he's excited by it.is this a serious question? Hmm
LMAo that must be funny to watch.
I think what penny says might be right.
they sound like pinky %26 the brain cartoon..lol..I know they are mice..

my hamster ran away out of his box at night where can he be?Should i expect to find him alive after 24 hours?

Answers:
remain calm.lock all other pets up in a room youn know hamster is not in.it is very likely he is still alive.dont look 4 him during the day.wait till it is dark.then put his cage with all his favorite treats inside on the floor towards the wall.they wont go through the middle of the room.if you think you know the room wher e he is.then put food and cage in it.sprinle flour on the floor to see his footprints.dont give up after a week, just keep the cage, treats, food on the floor put food pellets around the walls of every room, look in a dimly lit room at night. good luck.i hope you wll find your buddy.
I would start by looking in a cat's belly. He is a goner.
More than likely, you will find him alive somewhere there is a food source in the next day or two. One we had when I was a kid would get away, and eventually we would find him in the bread drawer - eating %26 living halfway through a loaf of bread!
I have had the same problem, many years ago when I was a child. Get a humane mousetrap and set that with hamster food and you may be lucky enough to catch it. Mine was mssing 3 days before I caught it, hungry but none the worse for wear.
If you haven't a cat then look under the furniture behind the fridge..the little tinkers can go AWOL for days..make sure no food is lying around so eventually you can lure him back for a feed.
P.S. My sons hamster was a Houdini and would often escape for a couple of days at time..hunger always brought him back to his cage.
Chances are you will find him alive mine could live outside his cage few a good few days. they always manage to find food and warmth somewhere. To catch him tho try using a humane mouse trap the kind with the trap door put his favourite food inside and leave it out on the floor at night also make sure you leave his cage open sometimes they return to thier cages on their own
you might I had one that got out and lived in the house roaming around and never saw him for 2 months and we also had a cat. My mom open the kitchen cabinet one day and the hamster had a nest between 2 seldom pans that didn't fit flush together.
sure he could be alive. Just be careful when you pick something up or step on something..it may be in it.
put his cage down on the floor..if the door is low enough.
He would be curled up in something warm and sleeping..they always sleep.
hey, chill out about ur hamster! search for him under and around sofas, beds, clothes baskets, nething tht is either in the corner or a dark closed place. im guessing wen he gets hungry he mite come bak to his cage but im sure ull find him alive after 24 hrs. oh ya!! DONT OPEN THE DOOR! good luk!!
well.keep trying, has he/she had a favorite spot to go when you were holding he/she? Try looking there! If not try 2nd then 3rd and work your way around the house. If you don't know if he is alive or not, nature works it ways and no one can do anything about it.
I would try checking in your couches. They like to bury themselves in cushions. hopefully you haven't already squished it.
I have a hamster hes not even 1 yet es never ran out so I dont have this problem but if he did run out of his cage then I would look in corners under furniture and if there is no food on the floor take his food dish and fill it stand by it and your hamster might come when he gets hungy and can smell the food.

my hamster lost a little fur and was bleeding, will anything happen?

i often notice that my hamster will keep biting his cage too and has a little fur stuck on his food bowl and cage bars. will anything happen? hes around 1 and 1/2 yrs old to 2 yrs
Answers:
was the bleeding from his mouth area? if it's just a little he'll be ok but u want to stop it from getting worse. he is biting to tell u he wants out. he is bored. his cage is probably too small and sometimes just getting a bigger one or adding one on will work. but most of the time u need to get him a hamster ball. let him run a couple hours a day. put tape on thelid so u dont have to watch closely and just let him run an hr. put him back for water break and then when he starts biting again hes ready to go some more. it can cause brain damage %26 misaligned teeth when excessive and this is an easy fix. $5 for the ball @ petstores, even walmart.
My hamster once had a minor cut. Nothing happened to him. But if its big, i suggest you take care of it immediately.
Well, I think I would be more concerned with the extent to which he is biting his cage. If he is hurting himself, he may be stressed, or bored. Does he have plenty to do? Does he have play items and plenty of room? Usually a small open area on the skin won't cause a problem, though infection is possible. Is he scratching himself? Check for fleas. If the problem continues, you may want to take him for a check-up.

My hamster likes Popcorn,Nilla wafers,Tostitos, and Iced Tea.Is that irregular?

Her name is Hammy and she likes Tostitos the most.i wanna know she is like sick or somethin? And she has the white squishy stuff coming out of her peeing area,is that irregular too?
Answers:
The food oddity is not an oddity at all. Hamsters will eat all sorts of things.

The "peeing area" needs to be looked after though. Take the little fellow to the vet before it is too late.
lol Yes take her to the vet and feed her real hamster food
i dont think its weird i have a pet rat that loves cheese puffs and apples I dont know about the white squishy stuff though
You shouldn't be feeding her all of that junk food.
dont think so but she is going to get so fat she might explode
There isn't really anything wrong with giving your hamster little tastes of treats, like popcorn and nilla wafers. If the iced tea is caffeinated, you might want to stop letting her have it because caffeine is bad for animals, they don't react to it in the same way that people do.

As far as the white squishy stuff -- All of the treats may be causing it. Is it milky white liquid, or is it semi-solid? If it's liquid, it is probably just urine - Sometimes the urine comes out milky, and sometimes it is clear. If it is semi-solid, like a mix of solid and liquid waste - Your best bet is calling or visiting a vet as soon as possible.

Hamsters are prone to digestive problems, stress-induced wet tail, etc. If the snacks you are giving her, or some other feature of her life is causing problems, you need to make sure she sees a vet and gets the right medicine. Wet tail and other related disorders can kill a hamster very quickly.

On that note: Good luck!
wow happy bunny. that might be more the food that you like. your hamster doesn't get to go to the grocery store and chose what it wants to eat. It gets to eat what you give it. Just like a child it doesn't realize that those foods are not good for it.

You might want to out this site
checkhttp://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/hamster_car.

wow! I learned alot myself by reading it. I have two hamsters myself, I'm glad you asked the question. I feed my hamsters a grain and nut like mixture that also has special nutrients for hamsters. But I also give them carrots and apples. The web site I provided lists other food you can give them.

Good Luck with yours and I hope she isn't too sick.
WELL, YEAH! But is SO COOL!!
I had a hamster, I named her Hammy too! She was my best friend. She lived for 3 and a half years. Still, I don't think that is normal for a hamster to eat/drink the stuff you said. You should take her to the vet. Eating stuff that comes out of her pee? That doesn't sound normal to me. GOOD LUCK!
my hamster eat popcorn, wafers too i don't think is weird
the food nope.but take her to the vet to get the white thing checked out

my hamster keeps sneezing and I don't know what to do.. plz help.?

So far i've had two hamsters both sneezw..what to do..
Answers:
They could be allergic to the shavings they have in their cage. Try changing that to a different brand and see what happens.
Try changing their bedding to kleenex.
your hamsters may be allergic to the bedding that is in the cage or they may be allergic to other animals that you have - or each other - then again they may just not like or be allregic to the food
Sounds like bedding. Hamstes get along best in Carefree paper bedding. Aspen shavings is the best for wood chip bedding.
Give them small hankies so they can blow their noses. LOL
Seriously, I think taking them to a Vet would be good.

My hamster keeps making a sneezing noise lately. Could he have a cold or is this how they talk?

Answers:
He may have a cold, or it could be allergies. I'm not sure if hamsters have many problems with allergies, but I have a dog that does every spring.

If he keeps the sneezing up (and you really think he is sneezing, not just like trying to communicate) then you should probably call the vet and ask about it, or take him to the vet to make sure he will be fine.
I had a hamster once and they tend to make a low squeak kind of linke geunni pigs but not as loud to comunicate my dogs sneeze and also burp too and it is very normal for animals to do that but if his stool is muiscolored or if he is spitting up then that could be a problem.
I read they can catch human diseases. If you can afford a vet perhaps they could help.

As far as I know, hamster do not make any noises unless they are in pain or something severe like that.

I just lost my pet hamster. He never made a sound other than to chew on things etc. He died in his sleep it seems.
If you have recently changed his bedding material that could cause it. Another reason may be because of allergies, or just a common cold. You can go to your local pet store and they have over the counter meds that you can buy without having to take the little guy to the vet. If he starts having a wet bottom, like he is peeing on himself, get a bottle of "wet tail" found at pet store. Good luck and I hope it works out for ya and the lil guy.
Hi Melanie, Sounds like the little guy has a cold. Do you keep him close to a window? Do you cover his cage with a small blanket at nite? I would keep a close eye on him for a week. You might want to go to petsmart and see if they have anything for a hamster with a cold. Are you giving him vitiman drops in his water? If not, you need to do this, every time you change his water. That way it will keep him happy and healthy.

Clowmy
If your hamster is sneezing alot, then it may have a cold! Which you should take your hamster to a vet immediately to get checked!

You should check first if your hamster has any of the following : sneezing, runny eyes, lethargy, weight loss, refusal to eat and drink or laboured breathing/wheeziness.

If your hamster has any of these symptoms then take to the vet and they can give your hamster antibiotics

My Hamster Keeps Itching..?

I have a hamster named Peady. I have had him for about 1 month so far. Today I noticed that he keeps itching his under belly. I don't think its fleas or mites because hes not loosing any hair. I don't know any possible reasons so please help!
Answers:
It could just be that he's not able to clean himself down below as easily, so it's bothering him.

If he shows signs of bleeding, or scabbing over, I'd worry. As long as it's not an obsessive type itching, like constantly doing it, or doing it until he bleeds, then it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Provide him with Chinchilla Sand (Not dust!), just a little bit in a small dish, and place it in his cage.

He'll roll around in it, and it cleans them. It leaves your hamster feeling SO soft, too. That might help clear up the itching. It's about $5 for a package, which has 5 '1 time serving' packets inside. Because ham's are so much smaller than Chinchilla's, each packet will alst MUCH longer than 1 serving, though.

I can split 1 package up equally between 4 cages with dwarf ham's. For a Syrian, I'd say use 1/3 of the package.

If it's one large package, though, use a measuring cup to scoop about 1/3rd to 1/2 a cup into a dish.
Male hamster are highly sexed little creatures. Your Peady is probably doing for himself. ALL of my male hamsters had this trait.
Clean the cage. Put in Cedar chips. Do not put any fresh fruit in the cage because they come from Syria. Give them fresh water to drink when they need it. They are dry food eaters and can get the mold on them from wet foods because they lack resistance as there is not much water in Syria - they are desert rodents. They excrete uric acid not urine for that reason. Keep the cage dry. Been there done that killed my hamsters from ignorant kindness. Dried fruit is ok but not wet fruit they love it but it makes them very fertile mine had too many babies because I did not know better and she would hang from the top of the cage trying to escape from nursing them. Yeah the males like to entertain themselves one little kid thought that his was having a baby.
r u using pine or cedar bedding? if so, immediately change to carefresh or aspen. the oils in pine/cedar can cause itching. r u feeding her too many oily nuts/sunflower seeds? too many of these can cause skin problems. they dont get fleas unless u have a dog or cat with fleas who passes it to them. as for mites---look for tiny black specs on his skin. i posted a remedy for those earlier. they do sometimes scratch and it means nothing. depends how often %26 how severe the scratching is. make the changes noted above if needed.
mites
It is probably mites, he just hasn't lost any hair yet. Maybe you should get him to an exotic vet for an exam before it gets out of hand
You have flees in your house

My hamster keeps biting me?

my hamster doesnt bite any wood chew or fruit chew i get him instead he seems happier munching on my fingers why?? he is already tame and only started biting a few days ago
Answers:
Actually, if you press between his ears it will force his head forward. This is a punishment. When he bites you, press gently between his ears until he either lets go, puts his head forward, or down.

Give him a small treat when he ceases and speak kindly to him. Never drop him, hit him or flick him. Reward him when he does good. :)
If you put him down when he bites you, maybe he will learn that you don't want to hold him if he bites. Good luck!
I don't know if you have been doing this but DO NOT EAT ANYTHING before you pick him up to play. they smell the food on your fingers and they think it's food. wash your hands before and aafter playing with him and see if that helps. Good Luck
Hamsters are not good pets. They bite (as you have found out) are active only at night and are dirty.

Rats are much better pets, they are cleaner than hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits. Rats are also smarter and friendlier. You can even spend time with rats just sitting on your shoulder, they are happy just spending time with you as you go about your business.

Many people are afraid of rats and are turned off by the hairless tail. Rats are nicer than some people I know.
all hamsters tend to go bad eventually. ive had 6 hamsters in my life and every one of them got mean after a while, no matter how tame or nice they were before. i think its the hamsters way of showing its old age.
well let's see here----TOSS HIM!
I dunno hamsters like to do that.

my hamster keeps biting her cage and ruining it?

i've bought her a nutri block and hard stuff for her to chew on. why does she keep biting the bars? how do i make her stop before the paint wears off?
Answers:
try put yourself in her. paws
image you were living in a house, even a very luxurious one, 3 floors, gym in the basement, billiards, ping pong, a 1st floor with the most luxurious living room a kitchen w/ a fridge always filled w/ the most delicious treats and a 2nd floor w/ a royal bedroom and a 8ft bath pool.
wouldn't you want to get out, too?
but, wait, no. problem is that except for rides in a panorama limo (kind'a) you never had any contact with the outside world.
how would you feel, facing the cool air of the night, in front of an open window, the unhoped chance to get out?

practically, if you have a room (or two) that you can make ABSOLUTELY hamster escape proof (vent openings no bigger then 1/2", no cracks, not even behind closets %26 all, no mice holes (!) tight doors %26 windows)
then, let her run freely in that/those room/s, a couple evenings, every week
she'll come back to you after a while (usually no more then an hour)
u can't make her stop. sounds to me like she's bored and needs more to do . does she have a wheel and a ball. perhaps she just wants her freedom and is trying to get out. wouldn't you.
Some hamsters just like to nibble on cage bars. It's just the way they are. There's two things you can try. First, you can coat the cage bars LIGHTLY with tabasco sauce. Just make sure their water bottle is full first! Second, you can move the hamster to a mesh-topped glass aquarium. I had a hamster with the exact same problem a few years ago, and once I got her into an aquarium she had no more cage bars to chew on.
I'm sorry but there really is no way to get her to stop chewing on the bars. When I had a hamster she acted like she was in hamster prison too!lol! She probably likes the taste of the paint or she just wants to escape! Try using an aquarium.
Let her out more or get her a ball to roam in. I'd be biting my cage too if I was in a cage all day.
maybe do what the 1st person said: buy a wheel and stuff, and I would say get her a bigger cage as well.
i heard that there is actually a reason why they chew on things.anyways-maybe she perfers the way the bars feel in her mouth than a nutri block.get something closer to the bars
they bite stuff because like beavers their teeth never stop growing so they need to wear tham down so they can eat properly. you just have to keep offering her a variety of things untill you find something she likes to chew they are very hard to deter from chewing.,
Poor little baby,he or she's screaming at you:
GET ME OUT OF HEEEEEEEERE !
you are probably not leting out enough
your hamster probably wants more attention try playing with it as much as possible if that doesn't work get it a chew toy to chew on instead or watch it crawl around on the floor for More exerigfse
that's what i had do with my hamster Patience is the key
She's bored. She needs a bigger cage and more things to do. You can't stop her from biting your current cage. Get a really big cage that doesn't have painted bars. The paint could make her sick if she eats enough of it.
GET HER A TANK. my dwarfy has a tank, the bedding can't come out, and there are no bars to bite. So much better for the hamster!

my hamster just isnt seeming her normal self. she is not alert to alot and looks like she is always tired.

is there any vitamins or supplements i cood give her?
Answers:
Is she old for a hamster? Their life span is only 2-3 years. She just might be getting old and tired. Keep her warm, make sure she has a clean cage and fresh food and water.
take her to the vet
Age? Lack of sleep? Think of logical stuff before doubting a proved diet.
2 points
I think she might be lonely.
However, in the event that I am incorrect, you can always check out this website for supplements geared towards hamsters, gerbils and mice.

http://www.critterstore.com/visu.html.

good luck!
did you know all hamsters are nocturnal?
When hamsters get older, they become much less active and sleep most of the time. Depending on the age of your hamster, this is probably the case. She's probably fine, just leave her alone mostly. The same thing happened to my hamster, she started sleeping almost all the time, it started when she was about two until she passed six months later. Try not to bother her much, unless she is awake and active at the time. If she is pretty young or is showing any symptoms of illness take her to the vet, otherwise, she is fine.

My hamster isn't running on his wheel any more, whats wrong?

I've had my hampster for 6 months or so and he was always happy, running on his wheel, etc. We had to move him to the basement a little over 2 weeks ago and since then he doesn't run on his wheel. All he does is eat and when he wakes up he comes out of his hut and sits in the corner where he pees and sleeps some more. Is there anything I can do? I can't keep him upstairs anymore, why is he acting this way and can I make him happy again?
Answers:
He might be depressed. Is there a window in the basement? Also, it might be cold for him. Maybe you can keep him in your bedroom or something.
HE IS MAD AT YOU, FOR PUTTING HIM IN THE BASEMENT.
Maybe its his way of rejection as you have moved him,has the basement got plenty of light.
he might be depressed since he is in the basement, animals do have feelings.is he getting enough light down there? another thing when hamsters get older they do tend to get lazier
He needs to get some hamster .
Maybe he is pregnant. The best way to check is to go to the doctor to make sure.
He realized he was getting nowhere
He must have reached his destination. No, I think he is either depressed because he feels ignored and abandoned, or it is too cold or not enough natural light. Animals get used to human contact and human activity and he probably feels lonely. Please, if you can't give him your love and attention, give him to someone who can.
Hamsters dont like being isolated. They are happier around people. If you are going to isolate it, then buy it a companion of the same gender. Right now it is depressed, and could end up dying because it it unhappy.
Animals, like people, feel sluggish when overweight. Try feeding him less and he will be more prone to exercise.
would you like living in the basement alone ? Maybe he feel's unwanted and abandoned? was he near a window where he could get in the sun light ? do you realize we and all living creatures need vitamin d from the sun light? is his wheel dirty , or hard to turn. is it getting to small for him? maybe he miss's being closer to his human counter part's . seeing other human's or hearing them . , try leaving a radio on low to keep him company . something soothing for music . not heavy metal . maybe Country ?

My hamster isn't eating its food, what do I do?

Ok, well, I have had my hamster on the same food for a while. when I went to get a fresh batch, there were moths in it. EWW! The food had corn kernals and sunflower seeds. The new food is A HUGE bag with other things besides those ingrediants. He isnt eating it! I dont want to waste all that food, what do I do?
Answers:
donate that food to an animal shelter, and buy the same kind that he liked
you could try giving it some of its favorite foods or take it to the vet for a checkup
Eat your hamster.
When I was YOUNGER I wrongly "caged" hamsters I had all the TUBES and sandbox situations of tunneling. I was NON_VEGAN and I did not consider the ABUSE and PAIN associated with the buying and selling of creatures . like man once did to his fellow man.. when I was younger a SILAGE TRUCK tipped over on the side of the road right out in fromt of my house and I scooped some of that stuff up and the hamster seemed to eat it, maybe so maybe not. I do not know if that was a good idea or not.. like I said CAGING a creature like that was wrong in the first place.. I would not like to be caged like that, and then TOLD who to mate with.. I recall that perhaps one of the hamsters would try to RAPE another one that must have been horrible and I just stood there watching or what as a child. thinking about the BREEDING, I was VERY SICK. this reminds me of a HORRIBLE time in my life. it was almost as if I put myself in a cage because of teh way I caged a hamster. PLEASE FORGIVE ME

link.20fr.com
Put him back on his regular food, but most importantly get him to a vet quickly because he could be ill. I would also, as someone else suggested, donate your food to a local animal sanctuary.
you have to waste it, ask the pet shop about a good for for ur hamster. do u have ny other pets to feed that food to? if not feed it to birds outside
bring your hamster to the vet. it probably ate a moth and got sick.

My hamster is sick?

My hamster is sick and we took her to the vet and he said that she has an ear infection, so we game her some ear drops now her ears feel better, but her fur is still coming out and there are a couple of places where there is bloody dry skin, and the vet didnt know what that was. so does anyone know? is there a way to cure my baby??
Answers:
Have your vet do a skin scraping and a 'tape test' for skin mites.
A 'tape test' is when a bit to clear tape is pressed against the sore spot and then put under the microscope- some kinds of mites will stick to it and you can see them.

Hamsters can scratch off their fur and hurt their own skin, they have sharp little claws.

If she has mites, those can be treated. You may be wise to take her to an exotic/pocket pet vet. Not all dog and cat vets are familiar with pocket pets.
How old is it?

Put neosporin on its skin
Try giving her a warm bath in very mild soap.like baby shampoo. let her dry good then put some triple antibiotic on the spots 2-3 times a day.good luck One more thing.start giving her hamster vitamins in her water..you can get them at Walmart
Take you hammie to a vet that deals with exotics,

If your hamster has patches of missing fur you hammie more than likely has mites, most hamsters and guinea pigs get them from using shavings, it also comes from the breeder that they get their pets from, most little guys like this are bred by animal millers, we see this all the time in our rescue,
it is so sad )O:

I have listed a link and infor here for you.
Demodectic mange: A common external parasite problem of hamsters, is caused by mites that reside within the hair follicles and certain glands of the skin. The mites cause dry, scaly skin and significant hair loss, especially over the back. This disease is rarely a problem by itself and is frequently associated with long-standing, debilitating diseases, such as those involving the kidneys. Hamsters exhibiting hair loss should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. The doctor will do a skin scraping and examine it under the microscope. The presence of mites in the scraping confirms the diagnosis. This disease can be treated, but the patient may have an underlying problem for which there is no practical treatment or cure.

My Hamster is sick, he is breathing really hard. What should I do?

He might have caught a cold from my a human family member. And he was stupidly placed under a open window when it was REALLY cold a for a while thanks to my stupid brother. He's in my room now so he's warm and has tons of bedding to keep warm in, new water, food.any more suggestions?
Answers:
Def take him to a vet. Smaller animals can easily succumb to even minor illness. Also, for all we know it might not be just a cold.
Take it back to the pet store.or call a vet who specializes in small animal care for advice.
I do not know how true this is, but my sister in law has a ton of small animals - well, 2 dogs, a few cats, and 5 rabbits. She said rodents are prone to respiratory infections and that is how most end up dieing. I would call your vet asap.
When you get a pet, it's a responsibility. Take it to a vet.
Take the poor critter to a vet!
rodents are definitely prone to respiratory infections. ESPECIALLY if you have cedar chips as bedding. While it does smell nice, the oils in cedar are irritating to wee beasties lungs. Short of taking him to a really expensive vet, I would try switching his bedding to see if that makes a difference. I use aspen chips, and my pets have never had any respiratory problems. At any good pet store, they will have a variety of bedding that is not cedar.

My hamster is pregnant. What should I do to help it?

Is there anything I should or shouldn't do? Should i feed it anythign special?
Answers:
if she starts to show some 'signs' like bitting you when you hold her in hand (which she doesn't do that usually), means she is about to due and you should start somer preparations like : put her and her cage in a quiet and dark place. do not disturb her unless feeding her.

after she gave birth to her babies, DO NOT DISTURB HER AND HER BABIES. if she feels stress and threatened, she will eat her babies. ALSO%26lt; DO NOT TOUCH HER BABIES TILL 1-2 WEEKS OLD. you leave your smell on the babies when you touch them. that will make the mother hamster couln't recognise her babies and eat them.

if you are keeping dwarf hamsters it is not necessary to saperate the father from mother and babies. male dwarf hamster willl help baby-sitting for the mother. (that's what my hamster did. he actually keep the babies under his belly to keep them warm when the mother hamster couldn't take care of all babies.) if yoyu are keeping other types of hamsters, better saperate them.

after giving birth, mother need nutrients. just give ehr some extra food as she also need extra energy to take care of babies and feeding the babies. you can also give her some protein-rich food. like, bread soaked in milk and boiled egg white.

when the babies are about 2 weeks, you can start hearing them making noises and moving around in the cage. take care and enjoy the feeling of taking care of the baby hamsters. when you see them moving in the cage happily, you willbe proud of yourself.
Take her to the vet. Your vet will be able to give you explicit instructions on exactly what to do. You want the babies to be healthy, so the vet is your best bet. Good Luck!!
http://www.petshub.com/hamster/hamster-p.

read this and it will help you.
Quick get some clean towels and boil water.
take her to lamaze
Just give her a place to hide in to have her babies and lots of bedding. I don't know of a special diet, but my hamster liked grapes as a treat, and carrots. Be prepared, sometimes they have been known to eat their young. It grossed me out when I found this out!
Take her to the vet. She'll probaly have an ultrasound and be 'checked up.'
Leave her be she will do fine. I no I have been there with my gal Snoopy, she had 6 %26 I sold them all.
The food you normaly feed her will probably do fine. She will want to "nest" so make sure she has plenty of bedding materials and a place where she feels secure. Hamsters have had babies for thousand of generations without us, she won't need much help.
Unless you are prepared to watch them eat their young as they are known to do, get instuctions from a vet on what to do or take it to the vet until she has her young.
keep the babies and the 'mommas' seperate when they are about 2 days old because the 'momma' will eat the babies head off. . . . . . . :(
My son had hamsters that had babies several times. We did nothing special like taking them to the Vet. Personally I think that would be a waste of money. Make sure you give the mother plenty of bedding material to make her nest with, and keep plenty of food and water available. I would highly recommend separating the male so that he will not kill the babies. Before you know it they will grow up. We sold them back to the local Pet Store. Well, actually they gave us credit. Not much, like fifty cents each. Just enough to buy some future food or supplies with. Just make sure you take them some where that is going to sell them as pets and not food for snakes. Hope this helps.

My hamster is in shock. What should I do?

My hamster has all the symptoms of 'shock'. I don't know how it happened. What can or should I do?
Answers:
I am sorry. There really isn't much possible. Keep it dim in the room, make sure the room is around 70* and talk in a slow soft nice voice with reassurance. Say, "I love you." and things like that. Give him some whole wheat warm bread soaked in doy milk. Hamsters are lactose intolerant and can't drink normal cow's milk. Then leave him alone. Try giving him warm soy milk with an eye dropper. If the hamster does die.*knocks on wood* then say goodbye, he can hear you. He will know how much you cared about him. It wasn't your fault. And I am sorry a bunch of people are making this into a big joke. I know how you feel. My past hamster died of cancer and an alergy. People told me he was just a hamster but I loved him dearly, and i know you love your baby too.
take him to the vet.DUH
slap him in the face. that usually works
Take him to the vet. you must be blonde!
Take it to the vet.
shock? as in dead or stiff? meybe he is dead and you should bury him :( RIP hamster
Try disconnecting him from the electric socket
take him to the vet
shock is really bad for little pets and it can usually kill them, you should try to keep it dark and quiet, take him to a vet as soon as possible.
Try giving it sugar water. Good luck!
I would just hold him in my hands till he starts to feel better. If he is not going to get better at least you will have held him as he went to the other side.
Hamsters are too cheap to be spending money on a vet. Buy another one.
Feed it small amounts of Pedialite with an eyedropper or oral syringe;keep it warm, dark and quiet.Offer small amounts of soft food,i.e.;applesauce and banana, bread soaked in warm milk.I hope he makes it.
I dont think theres much you can do, if youve already taken him to the vet. Did you give him a bath? Maybe hes dieing. Sorry theres not that much I can do its never happend to one of my Dwarf Hamsters.
PUT HIM DOWN AND LET HM EAT OR DRINK! :(
what exactly r his symptoms? shock usually results from a fall or handling too much. did he fall? if he did, u can rub him to increase his circulation and then put him back %26 dont bother him. leave him in a quiet darkened room. is he drinking/eating? if he fell i'm assuming u told the dr. and he found no internal injuries?

My Hamster is in serios trouble please help me! Please give me only serious answers!?

My hamster is acting really weired! This morning (10 ish) we thought she was going to die, it is now 3:00 and she is really tired looking. We think she has eaten something poisionous to her or she is extremaly cold. What do I do? We dont want to take her to the vet..the vet probably wont be able to help! PLEASE HELP!
Answers:
Never under-estimate a vets care. get her to a vet asap.

If she is super old, she might die..and prepare for that.

My sister had a hamster and it sounded exactly like this.

It turned she had a HUGE tumor, and she died shortly after.

Hamsters usually dont live very long.. You probably didn't clean her water/food enough.or she got some kind of disease from her poop in her cage.
Make sure she is warm (heat a dry washcloth in the microwave for just a few seconds and wrap her in it). Try to get her to drink some watrer. That may dilute something that she ate. You can massage her belly a little with your finger. Good luck.
you should take her to a vet that specializes in small animals
Actually, you'd be surprised what the vet can do. I suggest at least calling the vet and asking them.

If she's lethargic and you think she might be cold, you can try holding her in your warm hands or even wrapping her up in a dry washcloth in your hands (obviously, leaving her head unwrapped).

If she's old, she may just be old.. I would still recommend calling the vet :-)

Good luck!
Sorry to say it might be her time to go. That is they way both of mine acted before they died.
they are right never underestimate and vets care..YOU NEED TO TAKE HER TO THE VET ASAP.You should have someone take care of this poor creature while you clean out the cage THROUGHLY make sure there is NOTHING in there she could have eaten .best of luck.
you could at least call the vet.

what poisonous item could she have possibly eaten? try to remember if she was out of her cage and what objects were surrounding her.

if she's cold, then warm her! use a blanket, or put her near a heater.

make sure she stays hydrated.
i would take her to the vet but here is a check list to check off does she have any discharge from nose or eyes is she sneezing are her eyes open or shut another thing how old is she hamsters when they get old can get ill very quickly she could have an infection or there could be lots of other under lying problems my advice to you would be get her to a vet hamsters if there not active usually have something wrong they can die so quickly please take her to the vet
put a medium size towel in the dryer 4 about 30 sec and rap her up in it.
i dont rily no what to say cus i dont no if its the best of help but i wish u the best of luck i no how it is to have a pet and not to no what to do i wish i culd help u out i am so sorry
All you can do is make her comfortable. We put ours in a bowl with a warm cloth and made her as comfortable as we could, Sadly it was her time, it was just hard to see her suffer and watch my kids take it all in and try and deal with it.
I have found that hamsters can eat the wrong things and you have to be very careful what is available to them. Don't leave food in their cage if it is starting to rot. Take it out of the cage rightaway. I don't know if they are being intentionally suicidal or not, but if they eat something not good for them they could get sick and maybe even die. Try to let them have plenty of rest. Clean the cage regularly.

My hamster is hurt. What should I do? Is this serious?

I took my hamster out of my cage and she ran off my hand. This is common for her to do as she is still fairly new. But she ran off my hand several times with me trying my best to keep her from doing it again. This happened about six to eight times. The max she fell was about four feet onto soft carpet, once falling onto her own cage. After a while I saw blood on my hand and wondered if it was hers. After checking her for a while I noticed her rear right paw, middle claw, to be bleeding. It doesn't seem that bad but I still wonder. I've had many hampsters before but have never delt with something like this. What should I do? Do I need to contact a vet?
Answers:
I agree with Andi, it is probably minor, Wash it first and put a little listerine (or what you use) to anticeptic it. Your poor hampster probably caught her toe nail on her cage when she landed earlier. Next time you play with her sit on the bed to do it so the landing is softer. I would try not to put cornstarch or soap to stop the bleeding, it should stop on its own and the other things can cause wet-bottom (diarrhea) which is fatal to a rodent. Good luck and great snuggles with your new friend, just try to be more careful. As far as the leg goes, if she is still moving around (which I assume she is because you do not mention it). She will probably be just fine, keep a close eye on her.
go to the vet!!
yes contact a vet and try your best not to let it out of its cage
If it's just a minor injury to the nail you can blot it with some corn starch. If this doesn't stop the bleeding, take her to the vet. Good luck!
I would at least call the vet to see if it is a minor or major injury for the hamster.
yes contact a vet
and next time be more responsible.
how could you let your hamster fall 4 feet?
yeah the vet sounds good. just to make sure she ok.
Yes, she may have just pulled a claw but her leg might be broken. Hamsters are really fragile so be careful with her and don't handle her too much.
i dont think you need to contact a vet til you see that it is getting infected if he can not walk he/she should rest dont take him out as often b/c she is young and when you do, take it out in your room as the safest place to keep him/her. i know you should do this because i have had a hamster who also fell and it was pretty severe and we learned many things from our veterian
perform the operation yourself! quick grab a knife and go to town!
I don't want to scare you, but if you do not visit the vet, your dear hamster might die! Take her as soon as pssible, because, as everyone knows, it is better to be safe than to be sorry. Good luck!
Maybe you should take her to the vet. It might not be serious, but one can never be to sure. Just in case, take her to the vet, she might get blood infection.
yeah i think that you should probably contact your vet just to be sure that she has not seriously injured herself.
She shouldn't be falling all the time like that. Be more careful in the future. Is she favoring her paw? Limping or chewing on it?
Have a parent check her over. She could be hurt internally.
your hamster could have internal injuries just because it fell on a carpet does not mean its OK as for the claw is the nail intact if not it will heal if its hanging off a trip to the vets would be advisable

My hamster is gone and I feel horrible.?

My hamster was sick for a few weeks. She was over 2 yrs old, so I thought its old age. But there were all these fruit flies hanging around her cage. I never had that happen with a hamster. Each morning I cleaned her cage, and the flies kept coming back. Most vets in my area won't treat hamsters, but I found one an hour away and took her there. The vet said that she has worms. They suggested that I leave her at the vet and they'll put her to sleep. I wanted to take her home and the vet said that she's only going to live for a couple more days because she's so old and small. The next morning when I went to clean her cage, there were little worms in her cage where she sleeps. I freaked out. I put my hamster in a box and threw out the cage. I took my hamster to the woods, said good bye, %26 let her go. I didn't know what else to do. I want to think that she's happily living in the woods but I know I killed her. It's been 2 days since I left her in the woods %26 I feel so horrible.
Answers:
You didnt kill her, you let her go. Ending your pets sufferring is the last kind thing you can do for them. Letting them live just because you want them too while they are in pain is cruel, and you freed her from her misery. I know it sucks, and I know it feels awful, but you released her from her pain and she is happier now.

Good Luck hun.
i know your hamster went to hamster heaven
Aw I'm sorry. Its never easy losing a pet. You might've helped it die faster.esp if it didn't have food/water.
That is so sad. Don't feel bad though. You did what you thought was right at the time.
Now go get yourself a cat.

Hope you feel better soon!
Your hamster has probally crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I am sorry for your loss. The worms in the cage were probally maggots (sorry for the bluntness) which are a sure sign of decay.

Again, I am sorry for your loss.
dat is so sad! *sniffs*
It's so hard to say goodbye to a pet. I wasn't there; I don't want to second-guess your decision, but it probably would have been more humane to allow the vet to euthanize her. It could be that she's found a lot of vegetation to munch on, but her chances aren't good out in the woods -- owls, for one thing. You鈥檙e probably correct in saying that she鈥檚 gone.

As for the grief, there's not much I can say. I have a 9-year-old cat, and I've often thought about how he's already through half his life. I love him dearly, so I understand.

My heart goes out to you.
I am sorry to hear that, that was a sad story. I think you did the right thing, it would have been very hard to tell the vet to put your hamster to sleep, so you let it go.
Hello Sky
This is very sad to hear, epically since you had her for so long. A hamster usually lives only for 3/6months. So really your little hamster had a good life. As for the worms i have never heard of that, but you have done the right thing by getting rid of the cage and all the worms. Some people would hold on to there cages instead of Buying another. Well done to you also i know it was hard for you to bury your hamster but you have done it now and you should be proud of yourself.
thats so sad.im very sorry for your loss.
what have u done?

I think its really bad..to do this..

Even u dont know it is alive or not..it is sick and u left it.

u can tk care of it naa.i know u cant bear its death..
Oh thats too bad, i'm really sorry. There is nothing to feel bad about. the hamster would have died anyway. There are only a few vets that can treat worms. They are so hard to find. These lovable creatures and no one cares about them. There are cruel people who say they are stupid and people who abuse them. They are beautiful, lovable, intelagent creatures. Vets very little care about them. 'You can always buy another." they say, but just like a cat or dog, they are hard to replace. You love them, you care for them they are so sweet but no one ever cares deeply about them like I do. I believe hamsters deserve to be treated better. No one cares how they feel. No one cares if they die. No one cares if they get sick. "you can always but a new one." But the love and bond with one hamster can never be replaced. "They are cheep just buy a new one." Who cares how cheep they are. It's about the passion and love in you that brings you to buy a hamster, not the price. 'they are good 'starter' pets." Hamsters take a lot of responsabilaty too. You may not walk them, or take them to the park, but they have to be wached carefully and have to be loved. Real love. Not just oh it's so cute love, but love so much you would be devistated if he/she died.

I can see you really loved your hamster. You didn't do anything wrong. You are a great hamster owner.
I was wishing I could have let my hamster run wild and free. But, I believe it would be certain death for them. I guess you did what you thought best.

I suppose the cage could have been sanitized with something like bleach. I found a large aquarium for my hamster and a special dome thing that he used as his house.

There are a number of little concerns in hamster care especially when they get over three years.

my hamster is eating milk bones is thah good or bad?

Answers:
Milk bones are perfectly healthy for hamsters. They contain a lot of protein, which is something normal hamster mixes can lack. They are also hard enough that they help gnaw away the growing teeth.

I give mine small ones (the ones made for tiny dogs) about once every two weeks. They are not harmful. In fact, I also mix hard dog food in with the pre-mixed seed style food bags I get at the store, and they eat that, too.
milk bones, the dog treat? dog treats are good for hamsters
bad
In small amounts it won;t hurt them. but not as a regular diet. It could harm them and they won;t be getting all the nutrients they need.
It's ok as a supplement (small amounts).

http://www.hamsterhideout.com/feeding.ht.
good
Milk bones are dog treats it is not good for a hamster to eat dog food
harmless.
Its fine. A hamster is like a rat it will eat anything
in smaller amounts its good for them, ie protein, but you should also have a regular hamster food fed to it.
Milkbones are fine for your hamster as long as there is a balanced diet availbale for your critter.
You can give your hamster treats as long as he has a healthy staple diet. Fresh fruits and veggies, and even a little junk food won't hurt him. Stay away from onion, and all spicy foods though. A dog bone is good for his teeth. They need lots of stuff to chew to keep their teeth from overgrowing.
And I thought I was alone! I have 3 hamsters. I gave them dry dog biscuits. It is a snack for them and it is another way to file down their teeth, but also keep them occupied for hours
Perfectly fine as an occasional treat.

I have given my rats rawhide before.

MY HAMSTER IS doomeeeedd plz answer!?

i was twirling around with my hamster in my hand when i accidently let go of my hamster she fell across the room into the WALL!! one eye was closed and the other wide open and she could hardly move i thought she was dead until she started acting normal except less active im scared is my hamster going to die!!? is she going to have short term memoryyy what will happpeennn!!??
Answers:
my son had dropped his hamster once and the same thing happened it took about a week maybe two for the hamster to start acting normal again. I would say don't do something like that again if you really care about your hamster they are really sweet animals my son used to carry his every were with him in his shirt pocket and the little guy love to be with him so take care of yours
she was probably in shock.just keep an eye on her she will probably be fine and dont do crap like that anymore
Call the vet and ask them what to do..
Omg dont do things like that! take her to the vet right away and maybe she could live animal abuser
Watch out for appitite changes. fact is, she would have broken some bones- gotten a concussion, could be bleeding internally. small pets are not exactly indestructible. you have to be careful with them.

she could end up having seizures. you could consult a vet who deals with small pocket pets- or just love her till the end of her life and buy another one when you're ready.
Maybe you should have thought about the consequences of your own stupidity.perhaps.
I dropped my hamster once when I was a kid and it did the same thing and it died a week later. Good luck.
first take your hamster to the vet, even if the hamster reveals no sigh of any illness. the reason for inactiveness probably is that he is shaken and/or that he broke his leg.
Take it to a vet. While your there make up something like "She fell" so that when your hamster tells the vet what REALLY happened, you can say "SHE'S LYING!!"
Your hamster is probably suffering something aweful. Be humane an take it to the vet! YOu harmed the pet-you find a way to get it to vet ASAP.
Mehehehe. Funny. That happened to my 2ndhamster as well. Except, she jumped off the bed and slid into it. Muahahaha. Funny. Ill never forget that day. Did i mention Im Sadistic in my profile? I dont think. no i havent. Dang it.
OMG!that was a idiotic thing to do! dont worry, dont panic. just take your pet to the vet immediately. it probably got a concussion, or brain damage, or broken bones.if your hamster has permanent damage, the best thing to do is uthanize it, so it doesnt suffer any more. besides, u can always get a new hamster=)
you dont deserve to have a pet. you are a sucky animal keeper.
not a good idea to spin your hamster around in circles in the first place. I wouldn't get another hamster! but check with your vet if she still isnt back to normal by tomorrow

My hamster is acting strange?

Yesterday she was walking funny and today she is walking into things, could she have had a stroke she is only 14 mths old? Im taking her to the vets later.
Answers:
A stroke sounds like the most likely thing to me. Mild strokes do not cause paralysis, but they can cause disorientation and make them look a bit "wonky". I keep hamsters and gerbils and have done for a while. Two of my gerbils have had mild strokes but continued to live quite happily for many months afterwards.its just that their heads are tilted a little bit!!

Of course it may not be a stroke and your vet will advise, but my vet has always said that as long as the animal still seems active and is eating okay then they can carry on fine. If your hammy seems to be having trouble eating initially, I have been recommended to feed them baby food. I know it sounds silly, but its easy to eat and can help build them up again after they have been ill. Heinz porridge and apricot custard seem to work wonders.

Good luck at the vets and I hope your little hammy is okay.
Has she been anywhere near a rocket powered car?
stop feeding her the blue smarties!!hope she's ok
maybe she doesn't like bush!
She may be blind in one, or both eyes. If she had had a stroke she would be paralized down one side, and not really walking anywhere! Hope that helps, good luck with the vets!
Poor we thing i bet she's all confused, your Hamster has lived longer than any of mine. The longest i have had 1 is 6 months
don't waste your time, it is so old in hamster years nothing can be done.
Suggest you humanely kill it yourself with a brick or borrow a cat
GET THE AIR AMBULANCE OUT AT ONCE
I would take her to a vet as this does not sound normal.
Although you say the hamster is only 14 months, the average life span of a hamster is 18 months - 2 years.
maybe she cant see well thats y she runs into things. hope he'll be all right!!
oh bless her she may have an ear infection . take her to the vets good luck
1st off i'm glad youre taking her to the vet. she should have the right answer rather than the guesses u get here. it could be a stroke as u mentioned but it could also be an ear infection which simple antibiotics will cure. does she walk with a tilted head or scratch her ears or shake his head? she's not that old and strokes tend to be in older hamsters. with a stroke u may see the head tilt too but she wont be as mobile and her eating may lessen--u will have to handfeed if that happens. does one side seem paralyzed?

desmond is misinformed. lifespan is 2-3 yrs. and anyone whose hamsters die within 6 mths is either not treating them properly or always getting old hamsters.
good luck!
Hamsters only live 18 mos to 2 yrs max. Yes she could have had a stroke, or--seriously, not kidding--a concussion falling off her wheel. She is getting up there, age wise, for a hamster! Usually it's cancer that gets them; she might have a brain tumor. Sorry, not good news.
Is she drinking water> It could be dehydration or an ear infection. The life span for a hamster is 2-3 years, so since she is almost half way through her life span %26 now this problem, it is definately recommended that you make that trip to the vet.
I wish you the best of luck!
I have included a website that you may want to refer to.
Not sure whats wrong with your wee hammy, but glad to hear your taking it to the vet, some people wouldn't bother, and that's just not right. Good luck with the vet later. Ive got a housefull of the tiny wee things, my son's breeding them and they are so adorable, hate having to give them away.
thats a good idea she maybe termanly ill
Sorry about your hamster. Shes probibly blind. If I were you I wouldnt take her to the vet. Its to spendy. But if you really do want it to live then go ahead! I hope it starts to feeling better!

my hamster is about 1 and a half years old, yet he stays in his bed/box the whole time, is he ill?

+ how old do hamsters live for?
Answers:
hamsters are nocturnal..they sleep during the day, and come out for a FEW hours at night..usually around 3-8 am..so you just might not see your hamster out and about. now, if your hamster is moving sluggishly, not using his wheel, and not drinking, he may be sick. but i would just listen for his wheel at night. hamsters live usually to about 2-3 years old.
well I used to breed hamsters and it depends hamsters come out at night and sleep during the day but if he's not coming out at night he could be ill. Is he eating?? Maybe you should take out his bed/box and see if that helps. they live about 2-3 years. Good Luck!
no
I think he could be cream crackered or dead?
this is very normal. some hamsters (and animals) are lazy and some are active.try taking him out of the box for a play about 3 times a week and wash him often!
most live to be 2-3 years old, I've had several in my life and one thing to know about them that if they are sick most of the time they just don't have the will to live which is really sad. If you are really worried about yours you can take it to the vet, usually runs about 30 bucks for a quick check up. I wish you good luck, I just lost my little guy to a brain tumor.
No, but he's quite old for a hamster - their life-span is about 2 years on average, so he's about 60 or thereabouts in human terms.
Have you checked that he doesn't come out at night. Mine does. ALL NIGHT! This is my second hamster and I have had him 2 years , my first one lived over three years. I always give him a variety of food including small pieces of fresh veg and friut. They love popcorn.
Hamsters are nocturnal ,jusgt how long has he been in his box?
Is Hammy eating?
Is there proof Hammy is using the toilet?
Disturb the nest a little -see what happens
The hamster may be hibernating..
Take it to a vet.
no i dont think he is ill it is just hamster only live untill they are about 2 they have a very short live span so he could be ready to give up
also hamster do sleep alot so this could be why.
try getting him out and playing with him more.buy him some fun things to go in his cage

good luck x
hamsters sleep a lot of the time. they are nocturnal so they only wake up for a couple of hours during the night. i had a hamster that lived for 2 years once.
1-3 years is all. there hearts beat 200 times a minute so they don't last long.

sorry
In hamster years your hamster is now a geriatric, this is probably why he is not coming out of bed (unless you think that he seems ill).
hes out at night if not get him a zimmer frame ,//////////////

my hamster has the symptoms of wet tail but do they wet the saw dust?

hello please get back to me also take into acount i have an email address if ya wanna talk just let me know on www.pinky@fsmail.net thanks bye xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Answers:
yeah it could die from it. i have one but it has never had it. take it to a vet and they may be able to help her. if not then i don't know what else to say but may be good-bye to the hamster. i'm very sorry
They will usually have diarreha all around thier tail. Mine died from it!! yes there will be poo on the sawdust.
Wet tail is diarrhea in hamsters, caused by stress. They very rarely live after having it, I am so sorry. I lost a hamster that way. The best thing to do is to keep their cage clean but other than that leave them be. It can take time for them to pass, but if you give them a very clean and calm environment, your hamster could live. Good luck!
Hi

Wet tail is often fatal. Please call your VET.

Wismom
go to the store and buy dri tail.

my hamster has long teeth i dont now what to do?

my hamster lost her top teeth and her bottom teeth grew realy long and i dont now what to do
Answers:
is it an older hamster? did the top ones break off or fall out? he may not be getting the proper foods he needs. he will have trouble eating and will need to be fed soft foods such as whole wheat bread, scrambled egg, mild cheese, shredded carrot, and hamster pellets softened in water. (cheese/carrots not every day)the bottom ones will need to be trimmed by the vet or he wont be able to eat at all. there is also a risk that the teeth will grow until they penetrate the skull, killing the hamster.
go and buy chew sticks - they'll help - and after that, make sure there are plenty of things for her to chew on to keep them shorter.
They either need to be filed down or clipped off or else she'll hurt herself or possibly starve to death. The vet can do this for you the first time.
Bring her to the vet and have them clip her teeth. It doesnt hurt them its like clipping your nails. If left untreated she could starve and die.
Buy her a chew stick and put it in the cage or buy one of those chewable houses
chew treats, but if it is bad enough you can go to a small mamal vet and get them trimmed

My hamster has escaped, any suggestions on catching him? He seems to have made a nest under kitchen cupboards?

He sneaks out at night and steals food and bedding. he is a very clever hamster no matter how hard we tried to stop him escaping he found other ways.
Answers:
trick that never failed me in my nans pet shop she had since I was young was clear anything they could get to as a food source get a bucket put food in the bottom and put the bucket near something the hamster can climb up onto and into the bucket from -they get in but can't get out or next time get a rat you can call them and they come back a hamster will spend its live running from you. to stop it escaping you need a better cage
Mine got out a few times. We just left the cage open and he went back in..
That happened with my hamster. I cought him by setting out food. A way to keep him from not escaping is going to a local pet store and asking a sales person for the safest cage
put some tasty treats on the floor by where you think he is and step away and wait. you should get one of those plastic cages that have the little vent holes and make sure the door is secure. that should keep him from getting away any more
I too have lost small animals like mice. The best thing to do is( if you can) remove the bottom of the cupboard then you can see him. If that doesn't work is also recommend a humane trap that can be found at places like Tractor Supply co. They are awesome and work so well. It does not hurt the animal. All you have to do is put a treat on the inside and wait. Good luck! ;)

Best Wishes,
CC
I think the food trap is the most effective solution. Also, not only do you need a stronger cage to hold him, perhaps you can purchase one of those cool plastic balls for him to roll around in during the day. That way, he can roam about freely and you guys don't have to worry about him hiding or stealing food.
Do you have a dyson hoover. That will get him out and he gets a free funfair ride at the same time. good luck
I would recommend Cadbury's Chocolate Buttons. Works everytime. If its a small hamster get a humane (won't kill the hamster) trap and put the choccy button in the trap. If its a biggish hamster leave the cage open and easily accessible to your hamster and put a few choccy buttons in..and wait.
Give hammy 10mins tops before he/she gives in!!
Buy a new cage with a lockable door after all hes not superhammy someone must be letting him out.
Don't set out *any* food or water unless you are in the room, preferably in the evening, and watch quietly. Eventually he'll get hungry enough to just come out to eat and drink.
this is were mine was living!
we coaxed him out with hamster chocs
he can't resist them!!

good luck and happy hamster hunting!!
O this is a good fun question. You can spend hours having fun trying to catch your little hamster. Although they are nice in some ways they need to be treated in roughly the same way as mice. They are not too clever so if you put out a lump of food (this suggests cheese but it could be anything) they are likely to come out and sneak it off with them.

Sometimes they will comeback when they see their cage- it is probably something to do with their memories and remembering home as "home sweet home"

Anyhow once you catch him (whenever that happens) you can sit back and watch "The Mouse Hunt" and be thankful that at least it wasn't as bad for you as it is for those two guys!
put a bucket tilted partly on its side but not quite. Place food and bedding in the bottom and a ramp up to the rim. The hamster will drop into it and not be able to climb out again. Otherwise remove the kick boards from the bottom of the cupboards and simply fetch him out.
We have done this many times! We put chopped carrots on a paper plate and then sit quietly in the room with the lights off until he comes out. It could take hours, so plan to entertain yourself somehow quietly. Grab him when he comes out.

For the future, get a wire cage. Hamsters are too smart for the plastic ones!
My daughter had a hamster, we called him Houdini. He kept escaping. We found if we could get dandelion leaves and leave a trail where we thought he was, he eventually came out. Then the chase began.GOOD LUCK
Has he ever fixed a car.
Has he ever walked on the moon..
Has he ever contemplated the meaning of life.

He is hardly a clever Hamster then..

Industrious yes, clever no.
Use a mouse trap.

A HUMANE trap not a snap trap!
well i have gerbills that have escaped bfore and all i do is get my goldfish net and put the net over it quickly so if u have a net do that i find it easy to katch them that way
Put a bucket with his food in it then put something for it to climb up into the bucket, once in the bucket he can't get out.
Try putting the cage on the floor and little piles of food leading up to it.
the food trail up to a bucket has worked every time for me.

an no matter what cage you get if the mouse/hamster wants out it'll get out.

I had one in a chew proof cage which was bought especially and guess what it chewed out and escaped. found it in the loo roll making a nest.
