My pet beagle eats its own feces. How do I correct this habit?

Is there a good way to combat your 4 month old dog from eating its own feces? She is a great and incredibly smart pup but has been eating its own feces pretty much from the get go. She is kennel trained and we noticed in the beginning the odd time there would be some in her kennel but the majority of it was missing.
The breath is horrendous but worse than that she regurgitates quite frequently. Bile + Feces = Super-YUCK!
I understand there is an additive that you can purchase that deters them from this behavior. If anyone has any experience with these products it would be greatly appreciated!

Mother dogs clean their nursing puppies and eat the feces. With pups in the nest, you can imagine the unhealthy situation that would result from the waste being allowed to accumulate.

She is not doing anything that she believes is wrong. She was taught this by her mother, when the mom kept the nest clean. When mom became too overwhelmed to keep clean after all the litter, the pups were good little helpers and did it themselves..They didn't have gloves and bags, so just did it the way they could. She is just being fastidious. Scolding for it will only confuse her. She will not get the point, and you will have a insecure and traumatized dog.The reason that she leaves part of it, is that it is just too much, but she is doing the best she can to clean her own mess..

Dog's ancesters have done this for eons, to keep their area clean and to not let predators know where they live. It is as natural for them as hand washing is for people.

The only solution is to consistantly beat her to it. Hopefully she will learn that you can be trused to clean it up so she doesn't have to.. Meanwhille, there is an additive available at all pet supplies that will make the stuff very bitter.(Forbid) This may help some. Also putting a few pieces of pineapple in her food will do the same..
Note: the ones that do this are usually the easiest to house train, as they are good house keepers
Yes, these products have high sucess rates. Go to your vet office, they sell this product (usually comes in a powder form) and will know the right brands to carry.
I am so happy you asked that, My dog does this and I want to know how to stop her. She only does it when she is all alone but still YUCK. She is a Chiwawa mix and I hate to spank her or anything since she would not know by the time I get home what she could have done
You may need to go with food additives. Canned pumpkin or pineapple juice is usually what is recommended along with premium dried foods.

that is the healthiest and safest vet recommended option. If it continues, you may want to consult your vet for an over the counter product. There are a few out there- but the vet would know which is best for your pet if this doesn't work.

if your dog turns out to be an eater of other dog's poo (as in you have another dog besides this one) you'll also have to do this to your other dog to detur the pup from enjoying the other dog's defication. (As gross as that sounds.)
Hi, I have a Boston Terrier that is about 1 1/2 years old. He is a darling in every sense of the word except, he will not stop eating poop whenever he has the chance (he will not do it when we are watching). We got a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy 6 months ago and he has been enjoying her poop, and yes he has yacked it back up for me as well. It smells so bad that.that..well you know what I mean. We learned to accept it and never tried anything to stop it (outside of yelling stop at him when we catch him). Sorry I could not offer an answer, but at least your not alone :).
CAJUN PEPPER, SPRINKLE ON POOP.
Most dogs that eat their own feces are doing so because they instinctively know that something is missing from their diets. I'd suggest that changing her food might help find that deficiency--especially if you are feeding her lower-grade (i.e. grocery store) brands. Good luck!
Dogs, especially puppies (any animal for that matter) eats its own feces because it is lacking something in its diet and is attempting to get the missing nutrient from its waste. You need to get a High Protein(usually what the puppy is not getting enough of) Bdetter Quality PUPPY Food. All the Grocery Store and Wal-Mart.K-mart and the likes Dog(and other animal like cat ) Food has Animal BY_PRODUCTS-th waste part of the animal and i chicken for example the beaks, feet, combs which they grind up and add to the food and there is very little if any actual meat although they do add the animal fat-check where it says Content and also check the percentages esp of the Protein. Try getting a Bag Of AUTHORITY PUPPY Food rom Petsmart,Petco or any other PETFood or PET Store nad I can just about guarantee after several feedings the pup will stop eating the feces. It is also very unhealthy for the pup to be doing this for it is infact eating waste which is toxic and why she is throwing up and because she is throwing up frequently she is ingesting a lot of toxins and unless you want a very sick pup on your hands with possible permanent weakened health problems you need to perhaps put a subfloor into her kennel until this is stopped where the feces falls through-since the dog cannot be on wire for will eventually affect the pads on her feet(will break down the skin) all the time there should be a secction that is not wire or the wire should have a covering-can be straw/heavy burlap. where she can stretch out and relax,sleep-the bathroom aarea does not have to be that big anyway-to ensure that she goes put some of her feces in the floor below the subfloor right under where she is supposed to go. You do not want her to take more toxins into her system. She could also be tthrowing up because the dogfood does not agree with her.throws it up and then eats the feces-dogs.animals just like humans can have allergies to the content of certain foodsAUTHORITY has been tested and is totally safe from allergy causing foods in dogs-makes me think that too esp if she has been eating the same food The adddictive may stop her from eating the fecces but it does not address whydoes not give her the nutrition she needs. Please try the Authority.
Buy inexpensive canned pumpkin and add pumpkin to her food. It makes the feces unappealing to the dog.
I had this same problem with my boxer puppy. When we took him to the vet's for a checkup, we asked her the same thing. She said that it could be for two different reasons. The first thing to ask yourself is he housebroken yet, are puppy only did this while we were in the process of house training him, she said he did this, because he doesnt wont you to be upset with him for messing in the house or because he sees you cleaning up the mess and is just trying to be helpful. The way we got our puppy to stop, was just really foucsing on housebreaking. Another reason he stopped was because he hated to have his teeth brushed, which is what I did everytime he ate his poop. He finally understood that if he was going to do it, that he would get his teeth brushed. Good Luck! Also, call your vet.
my wife and i used to have this problem with our chihuahua, so we tried to use tabasco sauce it worked great once the dog even gets a wiff of that stuff they wont attempt to taste it because of the vinegar (verry verry potent)
