My horse wont go on the bit.?

I have been training a pony and it seems that at a collected trot he is always behind the bit. Then when i have him more forward he becomes strung out. He then begins to become heavy on my hands. When i try ask him to round up, he becomes even more heavy. But when i give, hes back to being above the bit. Any tips?

Sounds like you need to lighten his mouth up. Try using flexion exercises on the ground without a bit, just a halter then transfer that into the saddle with a bit. Also as far as bits go we use a jr cow horse instead of going to a more harsh bit.
You may need to try a HACKMORE Bridle. Its a Bridle without a bit that only pushes on his jaws when you rein him. It sounds to me like the bit is hurting his mouth when you rein him at certain points of the ride, so once you place a hack more bridle on him and he realises it, that problem will go away, unless you use a bit again. In some cases you can use both bridles at the same time only using each reins at certain points of the ride.
He may need a stronger bit to get him off your hands. Talk to a trainer that can see your horse and help you with the problem. Also try side checks. They keep the horse in the same place all the time and help build a top line. And if he pull's on them he ends up fighting himself. Make sure you start a bit at a time. To get him used to it. This built a great top line on my horse and she started traveling with her head down instead of up and in like a dessage horse.
Maybe he's got soars in his mouth? Check his bars. If you know what those are? If he doesn't, maybe you should start out walking him for a few days to get him setteled with the bit. If he's 2-5, thats normal. Or maybe he's just barn souar??
For this case, the best thing to do is work with a good local trainer one on one WITH your horse to determin the problem.
