my husband and i are in a really tough spot. we're moving cross country, and can't bring our cat?

our cat is 6 years old, and no body in this area will take him. we're moving from military housing. there was no pet deposit, and we'd planned on staying here. he had to get out at the last minute. this whole situation is unexpected, and the only place we can afford doesn't allow pets. we have had this cat for a while, and are attached, but keeping him is impossible. any suggestions? keeping him really cant happen, and i'm sorry to any animal rights activists i'm offending, but i'm a full time student going into dental school, and my husband will be working full time and going for his BA. are there cat shelters? or places that don't euthenise? please help!

Yes there are some no kill shelters for such animals, it may take some checking out but they find good homes for these animals, and they make sure the animal is well taken care of, I don't know where you are from but, you can go to a vet. office and if they can't find a home they may be able to tell you how to find the shelter. You can also find a groomer they some times have a board with cards on them and you may find the no kill shelter there.
why didn't you think of that before you brought this cat into the world? no, but seriously the humane society is your best bet. they are the standard in pets that no longer have homes
Ah woman, this is a small problem! I love cats too!
offer a reward. give someone money to take him and so much per week to support him. you can verify with pictures of him on a newspaper (for the date)
When I had that situation, I put an ad in the paper, and got lots of responses, and got to interview and screen, ultimately found a good family that lived on a farm, and since they both taught were home all summer to get him used to it. His name was Hairy Cat. I included all the vet records, litter box, and a bag of food. I knew he got a good home.

(PS if you are in Texas, add addendum and how I can contact you)
Take him to a shelter..try not to think about what is going to happen..
The shelter is more humane than just letting him go feral. If he has been a house cat for 6 years and you just let him go in the wild the other cats stand a very good chance of doing him in.
If he is in good health with all his vaccinations then you may be able to give him to a pet store and they could possibly sell him to a good home I have heard of this being done and the store may even offer you some cash for him on his sale.
Put an ad on www.craigslist.com.
Put flyers up at schools, churches, pet stores, laundry mats.
The SPCA will take any pet. They do their best to find them all homes, but some are euthanized. "No kill" shelters tend to be underfunded, over crowded and miserable for the animals. Research the facility you find closely before taking your cat there.
Good luck to you.
WHAT EVER YOU DO.DO NOT PUT THE CAT TO SLEEP! If all else fails, and it could come down to that, PLEASE contact http://www.bestfriends.org/
They are a non-profit organization in Ohio that rescues animals from either life threatening situations or like yours. You can't lose, give them a try!
Post an ad on petfinder - be patient though, because you will get alot of spam emails (if they say they want to use a shipper, they are scamming you).
Call or visit your local animal shelter, ask if there is a local branch of Friends of Cats.
Look up no-kill shelters, call animal rescue groups, put an ad up at your vet's office.

Good luck to your kitty.
