Well first of all, I think that the child shouldn't have been in your yard if you have an animal there and if you aren't out with him, so served the kid right.

Anyway. One option is to try the whole dog trick. An electric fence can but expensive, but it is one of the things with the highest working rate. You can get one of those ones that lets out a high pitch noise or causes a shock in a collar that you can put on the horse, which are commonly found in the dog area of your pet store. Or you can get a heavy duty electric fence. Hose your horse down once and bring it to the fence. That's something the horse won't forget, but it isn't harmful. Just a diciplinary measure to prevent the horse from getting hurt by jumping out of the paddock. Making the fence higher so the horse would graze the fence when jumping but not get hurt and fall, just a little jolt, would also help.

You could simply raise your fence or buy a higher one, but this could possibly hurt your horse when trying to jump over.

I think the best option would be to buy one of the little belt like objects that prevent your horse from jumping more than one to two feet up. This would hopefully keep your horse from trying to jump. Just be sure that the horse knows that he can't jump before he tries to hop the fence, so there are no injuries.

You could also simply get a really long lead. The tying to a pole is a good idea, but it could get tangled around the pole as the horse grazes, trapping him up close and personal with a metal cylinder sticking out of the ground. Not fun. So you could tie it to something a horse couldn't get around. The fence itself. This way, even if Horse does jump over, it is likely to simply jump back in. There's nothing better over the fence if you can't get away, eh?

Also promote the staying in. Offer your horse a treat every time you see him, but ONLY if he's been a good boy and stayed inside all day. Spend time in the paddock with him, make it a sort of hang out place for the two of you. That will help.

I hope all of this gives you multiple options and helps. Good luck!
you put a higher fence (i mean buy a higher fence)
There are straps that you can put on the horse to make it unable to jump over two feet , they don't hurt the horse but train it that it cannot get over fences
Get a higher fence. Are you using a wooden fence or electric fence or what?
Try putting up an electrified fence. It won't take long for your horse to realize maybe he should just stay on his side of the fence. Or you could always just leave a gate open for him to come and go as he pleases. You said he doesn't run off? Maybe he just doesn't like being confined?
As much as I hate to say it, you might want to make a HUMONGOUS cage in your back yard or I would try to train him. sorry I am not very good. E-mail me and tell me how it goes.. good luck.
Put a stake in the center of the corral and tie the halter to it with a rope about 4 feet shorter than the radius of the corral, that way he can walk all around the corral but will not be able to jump the fence.
Make the fence higher. It will cost money but thats what you have to do if you want to keep him. Also try some electical wire on top. Also he may be bored so you may want to try some different toys to keep him occupied.
I agree, put up a higher fence. Otherwise, it could mean doom for your relationship.
I really understand this. I had the same problem with my 3 horses, but now they follow me EVERYWHERE! I am a teen and i trained them to do everythin. If you put a electric fence on, the horse will learn how to jump even higher so it wont touch the fence. And then you will put a wodden higher fence down and he will be able to jump that too :o). Um lets see here.. uh lets see here.
Um could you give me a e-mail?

I would love to help you and maybe even talk over the phone about this situation, ok?
You can put ropes or some kind of tie around his feet from one front to a back but make it long enough where he can walk normal in the lot but short enough where he cant jump the fence and make sure it doesnt rub sores on him but when he goes to jump the fence hell hit the rope and it will make him feel pressure which makes him uncomfortable doesnt hurt him just makes him uncomfortable. Once he learns he shouldnt jump or try to jump the fence any more.
ok horse people the things that go on a horses feet are called hobbles. they do work good all my horses are hobble trained and i have 2 that can run faster in them but they cant jump with them just make sure you get the leather or leather braided type not the nylon the nylon can cut into the hide
i wouldn't put hobbles on you horse. if you leave them on a horse all the time it's very bad for them. if you have a wooden fence put a electric strand up on top of it. if he is kept alone he might be jumping the fence because he is bord or looking for another horse to be with. don't tie him lose in his paddock. if he steps over the rope or gets tangled up in it he could break a leg.
You must fix this problem. He's a danger to himself and others. He can also get hit by a car. And if he causes trouble or an accident you'll get hit with a big lawsuit.

Put up taller fencing.

Add a hotwire to the top of the fenceline and keep it on at all times.

Keep a friendly horse or two in his pen with him. He may be escaping to seek companionship.

Make sure he always has hay/grass. He may be just trying to get to the nice green grass out of his pen.

  1. put flags on the fences, i did this with my stallion ( this spooked him away from the fence ) and he never jumped the fence again.

Also, if he has no companion ( horses are herd animals thus, need another friend ) he will try to get to the other horses just so he is no longer lonely.
