My daughter's hamster seems to be having trouble mastering his water bottle. Any suggestions?

We have a Super Pet Critter Canteen 16 oz. and he seems to really struggle in getting water out of it. He ends up putting his paws on the end of the nozzle and jerking the whole bottle around as if he's getting frustrated. Have any other Syrian owners found a bottle that works really well?

With the Critter Canteens it is hard for thm to get the water. They are spring loaded so they can't push theball enogh to get water. Personaly I got my water bottle at walmart. It is just one with a silver ball at the tip and no springs. It evencame with a holder.
yeah pick him up gently and rub his nose on the end of the water bottle. he will get the idea of the wetness and will take the hint
You could try a small ceramic bowl instead.
How about putting a little peanut butter on the end of the water bottle, as he's licking the peanut butter off the water will also come out. I would think that a couple of tries with this should do the trick, although it might make him addicted to peanut butter, also!
Check to see if the bottle is operating correctly. If the hamster is young, he might need some help getting it figured out.
as Beez said: Check to see if the bottle is operating correctly. If the hamster is young, he might need some help getting it figured out. Great tip. I also suggest a smaller bottle. 16 oz. for a hamster is a tad big. all 7 of mine do well on a 8 oz bottle.
Maybe he doesn't like water?

Try some liquor.

I kid, I kid.

I agree with the guy above me. Try a smaller water bottle.

Good luck!
Along with the other posters' great advice, you can also try a gravity feed bottle instead. They usually come with a holder, and have a glass tube. Instead of having a ball and spring, it's just the tube, and is completely vacuum operated. Especially when dealing with very young hamsters, this can be the best way to go as there's always water at the end of the tube where they can smell it, so they know what it is, and all they have to do is lick at the tube.
