my hasmter is chewing his bars?

my hasmter sammy is chewing his bars and i really dont know how to stop him or if its bad or good i just got him so im scared im doing something wrong HELP
Answers:
Don't worry about it too much. But you might consider getting him a toy or some treats that are chewy that he can knaw on.
get him some of those chew sticks and take him out more often
Your hamster might just be trying to keep his teeth short. Sometimes they get to sharp and long and they need to be dulled. He'd probably like some chew sticks, they'll distract him from the bars.
It is somewhat normal for hamster to chew when they want something, or for no reason at all. Try giving him some small pieces of wood to play with, or take him (her?) out and hold him for a few minutes.
most hamsters, and rodents do that.
nothing to worry about unless you clean the cage bars with chemicals
it could mean that he wants food, more water, to play, things to chew on.
do you have wood in the cage?
or he may just do it for the attention.
but nothing bad.
hamsters have to trim their teeth like we trim our finger nails. If he has nothing to chew on then he will chew on the bars. I suggest you get chew blocks. They are little pieces of wood. This will help. good luck
It's normal, mine does it too. They do it to keep their teeth in shape. Get him some chew things, but he'll still chew on what he likes. It's ok, he's not weird or anything.
Does he have water in the dispenser? My dog used to lick her cage bars when she was thirsty. I checked and she was out of water.
Thats completely normal, dont worry about it.
It is actually a good thing. Your hamster is wearing down its teeth on the bars so that they don't grow to gigantic sizes.
Every hamster in a cage that I've seen does it, so it's fine.
I have 2 hamsters that drove me crazy with chewing.I gave them toys and chew sticks and they didnt chew the bars as often .Plus, getting them into an aquarium helped too.
Don't worry about it! Hamsters do that all the time, it's not bad for them at all, but maybe he is a bit bored - let him out in his ball more often and like someone says buy him some chew sticks - or just put toilet roll tubes in his cage. :)
You need to get him wooden and/or plastic chew toys. Hamsters also like to chew cardboard so throw in some TP or Paper Towel rolls - just make sure to slice the side so the hamster doesn't get stuck in the roll or anything (happened to mine)
Hamsters need to chew to file down their teeth which grow continuously. He should not be chewing on metal, as that could chip his tooth and cause all types of problems.
relax. hampsters chew. its what they do. no rhyme intended. head to petsmart and get him some things to chew on, maybe some bitter apple spray to put on the bars to discourage him from chewing on them. he may just be trying to get out too.
Unlike most other mammals, rodents' teeth do not stop growing. The hamster is doing the natural thing to keep his teeth from growing so large that he's unable to eat or drink.

Buy him chewy items to put in the cage. They sell them at pet stores. My hamster always liked the one shaped like a bell that had a lot of bird seed on it. They also make them out of wood. Go to the pet section and try out a couple, and see what he likes.

Don't worry, it's normal. Chewing on the bars isn't good for them, and the noise it makes is really annoying!
get something to chew on .
well this is good but i could be bad its good cause his teeth are staying short but it might mean that he wants to escape my hamster escaped resently get your hamster something to chew on like a toilet paper roll w/ no toilet paper on it this should keep his mind off of escape and still keep his teeth short
ALL THESE PEOPLE ARE WRONG ABOUT WHY. if he's chewing for 30 seconds it's for his teeth. if longer, it's because he's bored and wants out. it is NOT NORMAL to chew for more than 30 seconds---it's obsessive---like the animals that pace at the zoo. sometimes a bigger or added cage will do the trick but most of the time u have to get a hamster ball for them to run in. use tape on the lid because they pop open. let them run til they stop---make sure u r around cuz as i said the lid can pop open---just listen for him u dont have to watch. then put him back and if hes had enough he wont chew again--if he wants more he'll start back--then u can just let him run some more. my girl runs for about 2 hrs and then i take her back for a water/food break. sometimes she wants back for another hour. trust me--they r used to running in the wild for 5-6 miles and they want this freedom. this is safe freedom. get him a ball---$5 at petstore or even walmart. the best ones have screws in them---mines from meijer. he'll then just chew to let u know he's ready to get out.

do make sure he has chew sticks %26 give him the toliet paper rolls and even plain, dye-free toilet tissue---scott. but i'm telling u that's not why he's chewing when it lasts over 30 seconds. it has become "normal" because most people put them in tiny cages %26 its their only way to try and get out. if it was just that they enjoyed chewing they wouldnt immediately try to take off if while chewing they see u open the door. they want out! all of them! frantic chewing is ABNORMAL and unnecessary.

it can cause brain damage %26 misaligned teeth when excessive and this is an easy fix. whoever gave me a thumbs down is an idiot who wants the points for best answer--not someone who truly cares about the welfare of hamsters as i do.
A rodent's ( a hamster is a rodent) teeth are always growing. The reason Sammy is chewing his bars is to keep his teeth at a good level. Now, it isn't bad for him but, you will need to get something for him to chew on. Super Pet ( a product you can find at any Petsmart or Petco) makes chew sticks for your hamster. They come in fun colors and flavors. They are very safe and good for your pet. You are just doing fine. Just go to your local pet store and pick up some chew sticks.
that is normal for hamsters. give him a chew toy and see if it helps
it's natural hamsters need to grind their teeth because it keeps growing and growing until it pierces their lips so they grind their teeth
my hamster did the same thing. but what we did is we put a empty roll of toilet paper( the brown tube) in the cage. she chewed it up and ws just fine.
