I got 2cages with 20 hamsters free out of a local paper, and they seem to fight a lot and kill one another. When one like dies at night and I dont know it, then they eat on it till I can get it out of the cage. I have never seen this happen before. I started out with 22 hamsters and now have 11. I thought hamsters were vegetarians. Then I have had 2 of them just die with no physical harm to them. I dont know why they are dieing and need some advice.

Hamsters, unlike a lot of rodents are solitary creatures and should not be kept together. You have to keep them all seperated. Also, I highly doubt you have large enough cages for them which will also make them very stressed and even more likely to kill each other. Hamster cages, as found in pet shops aren't really even large enough for one adult hamster, let alone more than one. Either go out and buy as many cages as you have hamsters left over, or seperate them temporarily (remember they are escape artists, any temp home you make will have to be impossible for them to break free of) and find them all new homes. Keeping them as you have them right now is cruel and will end up with the deaths of all but one, who will not be a pet you will want to have.
Separate them.
give them many hens and cows
Well separate them strait away!! Slowly introduce them t each other one buy on i would say and get a few more pen's it might be too claustrophobic. Get a book and read further or contact your local vet! Good luck
HAHAHA i had the same exact problem they just cant get along well with each other and they can turn cannibal i always thought maybe because my room was dark and they got tired of bumping into each other and fought and killed and ate each other they are kinda cute but savage. i had 11 hamsters and they all died i couldnt stop them i just gave the last 1 away. you could try seperating them but you have too many to do that i suggest you get rid of all but 2 and keep them in seperate cages at night. its the only way i can think you can keep them alive.
Get a few pieces of wood and seperate them
There might be a bunch of males in there fighting for a female
You have to seperate them! The mother and father will eat the babies and attack them. You do have to expect a few to die unfortunately, that's just nature's way.
you need to put them in seperate cages and if your having them die for unnatral reasons I think you should take them to the doctors. and hamsters are vegetarians but it won't kill them if they eat meat
hamsters can only live together for a short period of time they get to an age that they just start to fight and die and yes they will eat each other. you need to seperate them. Only 2 females if you are lucky might live together Males never and if yu breed the females now they might eat the babies cause they are used to eating each other
Hamsters are territorial, and not very social. Male hamsters, especially, don't get along. Definitely separate all the male hamsters into separate cages.
Population density is too high and they are correcting it by natural means. You need to separate them.
Get yourself a book on raising hamsters. I know they are territorial and, once they reach a certain age, will not tolerate overcrowding. I once had two females together and they got along fine, but I was warned not to let a male in the same cage.
I think you should first of all take them apart from each other and then you should take one by one to the vet or like a little group so that he can see what is wrong with them. or maybe you should take them to anger management or something the most wise thing to do is not to have so many hamsters like that separate them maybe one or two per cage but only put some together that dont fight that is what i would do.
Hamsters can not be kept together, they are not social animals. When they are young they are okay but as they grow up they will try to kill each other. I had to that were litter mates and were find for a short time together, and as they grew older they started to fight more and more. I called the pet store which informed me that hamster can not be housed together they are extremely unsocial animals.
You need to seperate them. When hamsters get to breeding age they become agresive to the opposite sex. If they fight and one dies they eat it so it's out of the way. All rodents do this to keep thier home clean and free of germs. It sounds gross but in a rodents mind a dead animal needs to be cleaned up and the only way to do this is to eat it.
try getting ride of some. i had to take some of mine to the local pet store. if u want to keep them then u might just have a buy cages for them all. even try feeding them more food that what u normally would.
